This 1959 Ford Fairlane 500 Galaxie Skyliner combines rare
collector value with showstopping engineering - a car built to turn
heads and hold its worth! The 1959 Ford Fairlane 500 Galaxie
Skyliner represents one of the most ambitious engineering
achievements to come out of Detroit's golden era. Ford completely
redesigned its lineup for 1959, a transformation striking enough to
earn the Gold Medal for Exceptional Styling at the Brussels World's
Fair. The restyled cars introduced a sculpted, overhanging brow
above dual headlights set into flatter, lower front fenders - a
look that felt distinctly modern for the era. The Galaxie name
itself was Ford's nod to the country's growing fascination with the
Space Age, and the trim level backed up its aspirational badge with
bright metal surrounds on the headlights and matching brightwork
sweeping across the rear quarter panels, setting it apart as Ford's
new top-tier offering for 1959. That same year also closed out one
of the most remarkable chapters in automotive engineering: the
Skyliner retractable hardtop. First introduced in 1957, the
Skyliner was originally developed for the Continental Mark II
before Ford shelved that plan and adapted the technology for its
Fairlane line instead. The result was a car that looked like a
hardtop with the roof up and drove like a convertible with it down
- the steel top folding and disappearing entirely into the trunk at
the touch of a button. Making it happen took 10 solenoids, 7
high-torque motors, 610 feet of wiring, and a maze of relays and
microswitches, a level of mechanical complexity that still
impresses restorers and engineers today. 1959 was the Skyliner's
final model year, and it went out as a genuine rarity: of the
nearly 500,000 Galaxies Ford built that year, only 12,915 were
Skyliners. That scarcity, combined with the model's engineering
pedigree, makes this a standout piece of American automotive
history. This particular example comes to us from a southern
collector who clearly enjoyed the car while under their
stewardship. Powering this '59 Skyliner is a 332 cubic inch V8
engine fed by a single 2 barrel carburetor that together were said
to have produced 225 horsepower when new. Exhaust exits this Ford's
powerplant via a dual exhaust setup that produces a wonderfully
throaty sound out of the tailpipes. The Ford Y-Block is mated to an
automatic transmission that makes this iconic Hide-Away Hardtop an
easy car for anybody to drive and enjoy. Further adding to the
overall drivability of this 1959 Ford Fairlane Skyliner are several
fantastic options. At the top of that list is power steering,
allowing you to maneuver in and out of tight parking spot with one
hand. Additionally a pair of chrome outside mirrors are mounted
atop the front fenders, greatly improving visibility down the side
of this fantastic 50s Ford. Riding on a set of wide whitewall
radial tires mounted on steel wheels that are accented with full
Thunderbird turbine wheel covers capped off with the Sunray Emblem,
this '59 Ford has a great look and an even better ride cruising
down the road. The retractable hide-away hardtop works great,
raising and lowering easily with the simple push of a button. The
exterior of this 1959 Ford Fairlane Skyliner has been refinished in
Raven Black paint that completes the exterior look of the car. The
interior of this 1959 Ford Fairlane 500 Galaxie Skyliner is
absolutely gorgeous! The front and rear bench seats have been
reupholstered in a Tri-Tone color scheme consisting of Red, Black
and White upholstery, accented with silver-colored welting,
together elevating the overall, contrasting look of this Skyliner.
The red and black upholstered door panels with silver-colored trim,
the red painted dash, white sun visors and steering wheel, black
carpeting, and "Skyliner" embroidered floor mats are all in
terrific condition as well and they all retain a superb stock look.
The space-age instrument cluster is equipped with a 120 MPH
speedometer, temperature gauge, and fuel gauge, along with
indicator lights for battery charging, oil pressure, and turn
signal operation. The dash is finished off with various other
vehicle controls, an ashtray, AM radio, clock, and locking
glovebox. Whether you're adding to your collection of FoMoCo
masterpieces or you're buying your very first classic car, this
1959 Ford Fairlane 500 Galaxie Skyliner would make an excellent
choice. Give Ellingson's a call today at 763-428-7337!
