"The more you know about the new Plymouth, and the more you drive
it, the more convinced you are that not all the beauty is on the
surface! Underneath the gleaming exterior are many outstanding
mechanical features. You can't see them all, but you can feel them
in action, and they make you say. Here's a beauty in more ways than
one!" From the 1950 brochure
For consignment, a 1950 Plymouth Special Deluxe convertible with a
title verified 51,726 actual miles. This one has been owned by our
consignor since 1991 and garage kept the entire time in his care.
It retains its numbers matching engine.
Exterior
We enter the 50's with the same basic lines of the '49, but this
time we're adding more robust chrome to the grille and bumpers, a
trend that would continue through the decade with ever increasing
weight. Our example is colored Shore Green with wide fenders that
would eventually phase out, but they're here in all their glory,
accented with stainless spears at different heights, brought
together visually thanks to the trim that rims the cabin. A bold
ribbed rocker panel is a vestigial feature from the running board
days and connects with a polished gravel guard contoured to the
rear hip. The tan canvas top provides the perfect contrast while
15-inch wheels wear white wall tires and proper wheel covers and
complete the showroom look of this top of the line 1950 Plymouth.
Imperfections include some staining to the top, bubbling on paint
surface throughout, chips, peeling and staining below the gas cap,
spider cracks, and scratches.
Interior
Green vinyl door panels are sandwiched by the painted sill and
carpeted kick panels and both present in very nice condition. Up
front, the split bench is covered in a beige cloth crowned by green
vinyl; the rear seat mirrors the materials and condition, which is
great. An ivory steering wheel, even with its patina, is the
perfect complement to the green dash that houses three wonderfully
authentic period gauges. Embedded in the chrome mid panel is an AM
radio below a grated speaker that would make a jukebox jealous, all
over vent controls and an ivory lever. The floor is covered with a
green carpet and the trunk includes a rubberized covering that is
in good condition along with the included spare.
Drivetrain
The original looking bay contains a numbers matching 217.8 L-head
six cylinder, putting out 97 horsepower and fueled via a 1-barrel
carburetor. It's backed by a 3-speed manual transmission that
routes power to 3.90 gears out back. The car still runs on a six
volt system.
Undercarriage
Some surface rust and patina underneath but otherwise super clean
and solid for its age. Here we have a single exhaust through a
stainless steel muffler and drum brakes on all four wheels.
Suspension is standard coil springs up front and leaf springs in
the back.
Drive-Ability
The car is a quick starter and smooth runner, and we make our way
around the test loop as if it were 1950 all over again! This is a
fantastic cruiser that hasn't veered much from its original
presentation and is true to the era. Functionally, we note the
brake lights not working and the high beams flash high and low when
activated. Beyond that, all functions on this mid century beauty
work as they should. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these
functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot
guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your
purchase.
Just a nice, solid runner with great style and a pretty good color
combination too! Plymouth produced more than 600,000 vehicles in
1950, but only about 12,000 of them were convertibles. How many are
left? No one knows. But we know where you can get one today!
