2004 Chevrolet SSR 1SB

The Chevrolet SSR, (Super Sport Roadster), was produced in model years 2004-2006. Introduced as a retractable hardtop convertible pickup truck and initially produced with a 5.3 liter 300hp Vortec 5300 V8. It's considered a retro styled vehicle with cues from the Advanced Design period of Chevrolet trucks when big, bold grilles and rounded fenders were highlights of trucks such as the 3100 of the late 40's and early 1950's.

For consignment, a 2004 Chevrolet SSR with a title verified 21,997 actual miles. This highly optioned edition includes the 1SB Preferred Equipment Group which includes things such as a Bose premium sound system, and heated seats.

Exterior
This truck is colored Ultra Violet Metallic and only 1,293 SSR's were produced in this color in 2004, accounting for about 11% of production. The truck exhibits the circle theme on each side; with round headlights, circular tail lights, and half circle door handles that meet a half circle depression. Over the cabin, the rounded retractable top creates a streamlined bubble roof fronted by a steeply raked windshield. With the top down, roll bars behind each seat and a windscreen become visible, while a hard tonneau conceals the roof which slides nicely behind the seats. Twin exhaust tips boldly exit under the sculpted rear valance as the tailgate fits vertically and flush to the back, housing the third brake light. Standard SSSR 19-inch in front and 20-inch in back with staggered size tires that gives this ride a muscular stance under those wide hips. Imperfections include several surface scuffs, a wheel well liner that is loose with broken tab, curb rash, chin scrapes, and scratches on the nose.

Interior
The circular theme continues inside beginning with the door panels with door actuators inside circle trim and round speakers embedded in the molded black plastic. Even the safety reflector is round. Ebony leather seats are sporty and supportive and in excellent condition with some light wear on the driver's side and both occupants enjoy various electric controls including heat with switches below. A beefy leather wrapped steering wheel presents to the driver and offers thumb controls on the chromed crossmember, framing three black faced gauges on the panel with a speedometer posting a max of 140 mph. A nickel mid panel trim piece houses the simple A/C controls under a screen that relays info on the AM/FM/CD while the center console hosts a series of toggles and the shifter with, yes, a circular handle. Low pile black carpet is the floor covering here protected by SSR branded mats. The bed is finished with black carpet and wooden rails and the cover is finished with carpeted panels and a dome light, all in great condition.

Drivetrain
Under the hood, we have the shrouded 5.3 liter LM4 V8, rated at 300 horsepower and mated to a 4L60E 4-speed automatic transmission that routes power to the 10 bolt rear axle with 3.73 gears and Positraction.

Undercarriage
We find a clean and dry underside with some surface rust on suspension components, subframe, and rear axle. A single exhaust finds a stainless steel muffler and then splits into two tailpipes, exiting through chrome tips. Four wheel power disc brakes are on board and suspension includes coil springs at both ends with a 5 link in back.

Drive-Ability
The comfortable cabin is part pickup truck and part Corvette, and isn't that the whole point? In the end, it's comfortable enough for quick jaunts and long trips. It exhibits healthy acceleration and grounded handling and as a low mileage car, all functions work as they should. Like the Plymouth Prowler, collectability is assured with SSR's. Any time a manufacturer makes such bold design moves and, in this case, fitted it with a powerful drivetrain, and produced them in limited numbers, you have in the making a car that will be increasingly sought after year after year based on its distinctiveness.
