For Sale: 1968 Chevrolet El Camino in Morgantown, Pennsylvania

Vehicle Description

1969 Chevrolet El Camino SS396

"Stylewise the Sixties/early Seventies El Caminos and Rancheros are probably some of the most handsome utility vehicles ever produced. Their solid flanks are far smoother than traditional cab and box pickups. The 1968-1969 El Camino is one of the sleekest of the genre. The pointed front fenders and similarly slanted rear roofline give the El Camino a sense of forward motion. That motion can be quite swift when there's a 375 horsepower 396ci big block under the hood." Autotrader.com

For consignment, a 1969 Chevrolet El Camino SS396 showing 86,879 miles, but the true miles are unknown due to a PA title exemption. This car likely retains its numbers matching drivetrain, including the correct carburetor, but the last digit on both VIN stampings of the engine and transmission are missing. We've had our share of SS396 tributes over the years, but this is the real deal with proper VIN coding.

Exterior
If you're going to be a badass, you might as well not be shy about it and there's nothing sheepish about Hugger Orange paint augmented by black rocker panels and a band of black on the tailgate that accentuates the coveted SS 396 badge. A tight black vinyl tonneau cover smooths the bed that starts when the slanted B -pillars end. 15-inch Chevrolet Rally wheels carry 70 series tires and a set of Cragars come with the car. Up front, quad headlights, each in their own chrome bezel, intersect the nose piece and narrow grille which of course, sports the SS badge. Twin power bulges on the hood end with faux cowl venting. Imperfections include substantial crazing throughout and missing paint chips as a result, and normal chips and touch ups.

Interior
Let's start in the bed which is painted black, shows some use, and also has a few rust holes. Black vinyl door cards with stitched panels both look great and the black vinyl split bench with ornamental buttons also present in great shape. A 3 spoke black rimmed steering wheel shares the column with a tachometer and fronts a pair of square encased gauges; a speedometer on the left and a circular array of indicator lights to the right. Our center holds the standard vent level panel and AM/FM radio in line with the white knobbed Hurst shifter that rises from the floor. Here, black carpet fills the space and is protected on each side of the hump with carpeted rubber El Camino mats. Overhead, the stitched headliner remains in great shape.

Drivetrain
A few touches of chrome dress up this driver quality presentation of the 396ci L35 V8 with an absolute date correctserial number and the correct Quadrajet 4-barrel carburetor. Behind it, a date correct Muncie M20 4-speed manual transmission that routes power to the 12 bolt rear axle with 3.31 gears and Positraction.

Undercarriage
Driver quality here too with some typical surface rust and corrosion, and residual oil on the rear differential that may originate at the pinion seal. We also note a rust spot on the driver's floor pan. Dual exhaust runs through stock style mufflers and power drum brakes are found on all four wheels. Suspension includes coil springs front and rear with 4 link in back as well.

Drive-Ability
A touch of the gas and a crank of the key gets the big 396 bellowing and into gear we go to run this Hugger Orange SS around the test loop. There's obvious power underfoot, and the clutch is cooperative to create smooth shifting. The car...er, truck, also tracks straight and has good visibility thanks to an abbreviated cabin. Other than the tachometer, all functions operate as intended and it's off to the showroom for this '69. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.

Along with this real SS comes some NOS parts and some accumulated for restoration in addition to the previously mentioned Cragar wheels that were on the car 40 years ago, so you know they're vintage! It's already a fairly rare car and with some little TLC, this could be a show stopping rarity coveted by the muscle car crowd and Chevrolet people especially!
