For 1962, the Starfire was the most expensive car Oldsmobile sold, positioned above the Ninety-Eight and built to showcase everything the division could do. Oldsmobile moved 34,839 Starfire hardtops that year and only 7,149 convertibles, so the drop top is by far the harder half of the model to find today.

Finished in red over a matching red interior, this one runs and drives excellent. The power top works as it should and the car retains its original boot. The body is very solid.

Under the hood is the 394 cubic inch Rocket V-8, standard and exclusive to the Starfire in 1962, rated at 345 horsepower and 440 lb-ft of torque through a Rochester four-barrel and factory dual exhaust. It was the highest output rating Oldsmobile ever gave the first generation Rocket engine. Power goes through the Roto Hydra-Matic automatic.

The Starfire was Oldsmobile's answer to the personal luxury car, and the equipment list reflects it. Leather interior, bucket seats, and the brushed aluminum center console with floor shifter and factory tachometer were all standard, along with power steering and power brakes. The full length brushed aluminum side panels are the model's signature and the reason enthusiasts call them rocket boosters. Chrome fender skirts are included with the car. Air conditioning was added by a dealer rather than installed at the factory.

Jet age styling, a 345 horsepower big block, and open air seating in one of the more overlooked cars of the early sixties. Named after the Lockheed F-94 Starfire, and still flying under the radar.
