For Sale: 1930 Buick Series 50 in Morgantown, Pennsylvania

Vehicle Description

1930 Buick Series 50 Model 57 4 Door Sedan

"The trend toward longer and lower body lines is beautifully exemplified in this distinguished family car. It is an exceptionally commodious automobile luxuriously upholstered and fitted, providing rare comfort and riding case with smartness of an unusual order. Although a car is distinguished in size, it is remarkably easy to handle. Steering is practically effortless. One can drive all day over all kinds of roads unfatigued, for a special shock eliminator absorbs road shocks and prevents them from reaching the driver's hands." From the 1930 Buick sales brochure.

For consignment, a 1930 Buick Series 50 Model 57 4 door sedan with a title verified 49,773 actual miles. This rare car is one of an astounding 16 models offered by Buick in 1930, often categorized by wheelbase and passenger capacity.

NOTE: While this vehicle is titled as a 1930, it is actually a 1931 as per the engine and trim tag designation.

Exterior
Limousine like by today's standards, this long car is adorned in single stage Pacific Dark Blue paint augmented by an ornamental black band on the waistline that's bordered by cream pinstriping which encircles the cabin. The hood is black which matches the wide fenders and running board and as it happens, the 18-inch wooden spoke wheels. Up front, large headlights on posts and a light bar front a handsome radiator with sculpted chrome shell and a flying 8 radiator cap that doubles as an ornament. Imperfections include some chips, bubbling, weathered chrome, a ding on the hood edge, overall dulling and patina, crazing on the cowl and beyond, scuffs, scratches, rust spot on the A-pillar, and staining on the roof.

Interior
Hints of its once glorious past can be seen in the worn Mohair covered door panels, each with a striped wood header piece and nickel hardware. They are intact but show their age as well. Inside the brown mohair bench seat shows wear as well but still illustrates the sofa-like design that was commonplace with button tufted padding throughout. The rear bench remains in very good condition with less wear than the front. Rear passengers get a foot rest, window shades, a blanket rack, and suspended handles on the side. The driver gets a robust four spoke steering wheel, here in decent shape and fronting a stunning wood trimmed dashboard and instrument cluster. The frames around the gauges are not merely squares or circles, but sculpted, art deco borders with elaborate design. Rear passengers get carpet but up front, it's a rubberized covering that meets your feet and is home to the shifter, pedals and hand brake. Our mohair headliner is in decent condition.

Drivetrain
Under the hood covers you'll find a 220.7 inline 8 cylinder with 77 horsepower and fueled by a 1-barrel carburetor. It's mated to a 3-speed manual transmission that routes power to the rear axle with 4.54 gears.

Undercarriage
Expected patina is found and some oil on the pan, transmission and differential, but a solid structure is also noted with no invasive rust. Mechanical drum brakes are on all four wheels and leaf springs are at both ends as well. A single exhaust runs through a stock style muffler and terminates in back.

Drive-Ability
This was luxury on a grand scale and we ran the 8 cylinder around the loop where it provides a smooth and grounded ride without a hiccup. We note the brake light and wiper are not working but all other functions operate as they should. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.

It's not difficult to imagine this car coming out of a restoration and onto the show circuit as a piece of American automotive history. We all want our kids to be comfortable in the car and the back seat of this one is a virtual playroom, tall enough for small ones to stand up, (we don't recommend that while driving). Drive as is or take it to the next level; in either case you'll have a fantastic old Buick.
