For Sale: 1940 Chevrolet Special Deluxe in Morgantown, Pennsylvania

Vehicle Description

1940 Chevrolet Special Deluxe Coupe

In the original sales brochure for 1940, a sixteen page masterpiece of art and writing, the final page lists the specifications for each model. One section is dedicated to "Additional Standard Equipment" and as the top of the line, the Special Deluxe received, among other things, a cigarette lighter and clock, a glove compartments light, two adjustable sun visors, carpet inserts on the rubber floor mats, DeLuxe T spoke steering wheel with horn blowing ring, and a decorative rear license plate.

For consignment, a 1940 Chevrolet Special Deluxe coupe with a title verified 42,617 actual miles. A fifteen year museum resident, this piece of American joins our inventory just as we celebrate 250 years of liberty, and the car is coincidentally donned in some red, some white and a lot of blue!

Exterior
A fantastic shade of two stage Gulf Blue Metallic paint coats this car like a perfect piece of candy, bouncing our lights back to us and in deep contrast to the metal accenting on the car which includes the body long spear that takes in the hood vents. The polished window reveals pop on the deep blue car and there's even trim bordering the running board, making this Special Deluxe especially special, and the spectacular grille resembles a small locomotive coming your way, fronted by headlights melded into the bulbous, wide fenders. The 16-inch wheels are particularly cool with wheel covers that feature orange carefully painted red accent stripes and blue backed CHEVROLET stamping, all surrounded by wide white walls. It's all in fantastic shape with the few imperfections that include some staining, chips, surface scratches including a sizable one over wheel opening, slight damage on the rear valance, deglazing on windows, and cracking dry rubber on the running board.

Interior
Tan broadcloth makes up the door panels and shows a good bit of wear with staining and thinning, especially down low, but the hardware is intact with attractive, ivory knobs. Once inside, the cloth covered split bench and rear bench seats are in generally good shape. Our brown steering wheel presents nicely and fronts a fantastic deco style dash with white numbers on a caramel background. Light patina continues on the dash but we would show this car, as previous owners did, without hesitation as the wear is minor and appropriate given the age of the car. The floor covering does show age and the mohair headliner is in very good condition as is the windlace. The trunk and its shelf are in great shape with clean rubberized mats on all horizontal surfaces.

Drivetrain
A very original presentation is found in the bay where a 216.5ci inline 6 cylinder is at home, fueled by a 1-barrel carburetor and rated at 85 horsepower. A 3-speed manual transmission sets the car in motion and sends power to 4.11 gears in back

Undercarriage
Clean conditions prevail underneath where the knuckles are free of build up and that single exhaust encounters a stock style muffler before exiting out back. We note some oil on the rear differential. Coil springs make up the front suspension while leaf springs occupy the back. Drum brakes at all four corners have the task of slowing it down.

Drive-Ability
This once daily commuter now serves as a fine running classic and delivers a nice ride across our test loop, tracking straight, stopping on demand, and allowing for good visibility. We note the horn is not working and the passenger side windshield wiper travels downward and makes contact with the body. Beyond these things, all functions operate as intended on this blue beauty. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.

This former museum piece is a very original Chevrolet with just the right amount of patina to tell the story of a life well lived, and some caring stewards over the years. Straight body panels, nice brightwork, and a luxurious but simple interior is offered in this uncommon find that represents a prewar time capsule.
