For Sale: 1988 Alfa Romeo Spider in Morgantown, Pennsylvania

Vehicle Description

1988 Alfa Romeo Spider Quadrifogio

"Alfa Romeo's popular and accessible sports car, the Spider, was sold in the United States from 1966 until 1994, its long run divided into four series. The early cars, with their distinctive boattail styling, were immortalized as Dustin Hoffman's ride in The Graduate. After skipping U.S. exports in 1970, Alfa brought back the Spider for 1971, beginning the second series and heavy rubber bumpers arrived for 1975. The next iteration, the '83 to '90 Series 3 models, got a controversial black rubber ducktail rear spoiler." Motor Trend Feb. 2011

For consignment, a 1988 Alfa Romeo Spider Quadrifoglio with a title verified 59,381 actual miles. This one has had low ownership, has been garage kept, and comes with the desirable factory hardtop.

Exterior
This bullet shaped roadster begins with a pointed nose and a hood set far back from the fascia, leaving a smooth panel up front that's shaped like a streamlined Jet Black shark. Headlights are set back in a cove and cap the arched fenders which set the straight shoulder line that rolls flush with the flat decklid. The rear fascia meets the decklid with a right angle and the sporty rubber spoiler tops a tri-colored tail light design that still looks exciting, over a straight bumper and single exhaust tip that's just off center, a Spider trademark. In profile, character lines connect the 15-inch Alfa wheels known colloquially as phone dial wheels, and they are wrapped in 195/60R15 tires. The black canvas top is in great shape and the factory hardtop, with its tinted window, is the perfect fit. Imperfections include scratches and scuffs throughout, touched up chips, a few dings, rock spray, and chin scrapes.

Interior
Gray leather door cards are mated with robust black plastic features and both handsome doors are in great shape. Inside, gray leather bucket seats sit tall and have substantial thigh support with the driver's side showing some creasing and age and both have red stitching to match the bright red carpet below. A wood rimmed Momo steering wheel is up front and fresh, while the black backed dashboard has an instrument cluster behind plexiglass, easy to read and well organized. Vents and an AM/FM/CD radio take up the center stack while other switchgear is relegated to the center console where you'll find a wood knobbed shifter, almost horizontal in its orientation, an il portacenere, better known as the ashtray, and a digital clock. The trunk is also lined with retina searing vibrant red carpet! Russo brillante!

Drivetrain
Pivot the hood forward to find the 2.0 liter DOHC inline four cylinder with 115 horsepower and Bosch L Jetronic fuel injection. It's mated to the 5-speed manual that routes power to 4.10 gears in the limited slip differential. Power brakes and power steering are on board.

Undercarriage
Driver quality patina prevails underneath with a touch of surface rust, general metal oxidation, and only residual oil about. Power disc brakes are at all four wheels and a single exhaust runs through a stock style muffler, exiting as that single pipe off center in back. Coil springs are at both ends for suspension with trailing arms in the mix out back.

Drive-Ability
This Italian stallion is a quick starter and provides a comfortable cabin that's way bigger than most of the vintage roadsters we drive so often. The engine runs out well and provides decent power and with 27 year old tires, we'll take our time around turns, but this car remains poised and grounded at any speed. And how about this; all functions on this two topped beauty work as intended! While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.

There are British roadsters, Japanese sports cars, and then, there are Italian spiders. No matter which camp you reside in, there's something undeniable about the romantic nature of the Italians. Heck, even the scripted "Alfa Romeo" emblem conjures up thoughts of spirited drives through the vineyards near Monte Amiata or along the Amalfi coast. Here's a fine example in black.
