Introduced in April 1964, the Ford Mustang quickly established itself as one of the most successful new model launches in automotive history. By the 1966 model year, Ford had refined the original formula while maintaining the styling and performance that made the Mustang the benchmark of the emerging pony car market. Buyers could choose from a broad range of engines and equipment, allowing the Mustang to serve equally well as economical transportation or a legitimate high-performance automobile.
At the top of Ford's regular-production performance lineup was the K-Code High Performance 289. Rated at 271 horsepower, the Hi-Po engine featured numerous upgrades beyond the standard 289, including a solid-lifter camshaft, reinforced connecting rods and bottom end, improved cylinder heads, a larger Autolite 4100 four-barrel carburetor, and other components engineered to withstand sustained high-RPM operation. The result was an engine that earned a reputation for durability as well as performance.
The K-Code engine also formed the foundation of Carroll Shelby's GT350 program. Early Shelby GT350s utilized the same High Performance 289 short block before receiving Shelby-specific induction, exhaust, suspension, and chassis modifications. As a result, factory K-Code Mustangs occupy an important place in Ford's performance history and remain among the most desirable production Mustangs of the first generation.
Convertible production represented only a small percentage of total Mustang production, and K-Code convertibles accounted for only a fraction of those cars. Over the decades, many have been lost to corrosion, extensively repaired, or restored using replacement sheet metal.
