For Sale: 1937 Oldsmobile Sedan in Morgantown, Pennsylvania

Vehicle Description

1937 Oldsmobile F37 6 Series Business Coupe

"The thorough dependability and all around economy of Oldsmobile recommend it as an excellent car for business use. This model, with its unusually large luggage space, serves business men especially well, and not only does it provide extra room throughout, but it is also a very comfortable car." From the 1937 Oldsmobile sales brochure.

For consignment, a 1937 Oldsmobile F37 6 series business coupe showing 84,169 miles, but the true miles are unknown. This businessman special presents in mostly original condition and is a virtual time capsule of a time when cars were the travelling offices of salesmen.

Exterior
A few shades darker than the 1937 sales brochure six series illustration, this one features a two stage version of bronze metallic paint covering the big panels and a distinctly rounded cab with triangular quarter window, shared only by the Sports Coupe in '37. Our 16-inch steel wheels match the body and are wrapped in white walls and capped with Olds branded chrome pieces. The grille is a spectacular display of rails that resembles a rib cage topped off with a shark finned hood ornament. In back, the unusual configuration of two torpedo shaped tail lights puts them at the base of the C-pillar rather than at the end of the elongated tail, an idea that was likely short lived. Imperfections include chips in several spots, uneven surface between the front fender and engine cover, cracking filler on a door, various scratches and spider cracks.

Interior
Tan cloth adorns the inner doors and both present handsomely with the same broadcloth that covers the split bench seat which shows a few spots of wear particularly where the shell contacts the door, but overall in nice shape. A black steering wheel fronts an attractive brown dashboard with deco style numbers cleverly engraved and painted in the chrome rim of each gauge while bakelite and metallic knobs provide the controls. Brown hemmed tan carpet covers the floor and package shelf while a large piece provides the flooring for the enormous trunk. The cloth headliner is in fantastic shape too.

Drivetrain
A clean and original looking 229.7ci L-head inline six is under the hood, rated at 95 horsepower and fueled by the period standard, a 1-barrel carburetor. Behind it, a 3 speed manual sends power to the rear axle and 4.37 gears.

Undercarriage
Very clean conditions are found underneath where an X-frame takes center stage and a single exhaust flows through a stock style muffler on its way to exit via a straight pipe out back. Drum brakes are at all four wheels and suspension consists of coil springs in front and leaf springs in the rear.

Drive-Ability
"The flow of power is smooth and silent at every speed" writes the comprehensive and attractive sales brochure, and while this is certainly quiet for the period, silent may be over stating it! It does feel like luxury though and the 95 horses provide plenty of motivation as the car tracks straight. Other than the horn not working, all functions on board perform as they should. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.

This IS your grandfather's Oldsmobile and it's a doozie! The number of unique features make this car a standout from other products of 1937 and our example is show worthy as it sits and drives. Would you believe this is our first 1937 Oldsmobile and with more than 13,000 business coupes produced that year, we're both surprised and thrilled to represent this important part of a working man's life!
