Every so often a truck comes through that was clearly built to be
noticed. This 2004 Ram 1500 four-door is one of them: red over a
black and red leather interior, wearing a special graphics package
and carrying Evernham Motorsports logos embroidered into the
headrests.
The Evernham name carries real weight with Dodge enthusiasts. Ray
Evernham built Jeff Gordon's Rainbow Warriors into a dynasty in the
nineties, then left to lead Dodge's return to NASCAR Cup
competition in 2001. By 2004, Evernham Motorsports was the factory
Dodge effort, and that year the team fielded a rookie named Kasey
Kahne who promptly ran off five second-place finishes. Trucks and
equipment tied to that program are a specific and increasingly
collected corner of the Mopar world.
Mechanically, this one has the engine that mattered. The 5.7L Hemi
returned to Dodge trucks for 2003 with 345 horsepower and 375 lb-ft
of torque, and it immediately reset expectations for what a
half-ton could do. The Hemi pulls with authority anywhere in the
rev range and sounds the part. A K&N cold air intake sharpens
throttle response and lets more of that exhale through - a simple,
sensible, reversible modification and one of the first things most
owners did to these trucks. The automatic transmission shifts
smoothly and keeps the whole thing relaxed at highway speed.
Inside, the black and red leather with red piping ties directly
into the exterior, and the embroidered headrests are the detail
that stops people. The third-generation Ram cabin was a genuine
leap forward for the segment, and this one is finished in a way
that no factory order sheet offered.
The result is a truck that still does truck things - crew cab room,
Hemi torque, full-size capability - while presenting as something
closer to a collectible than a work vehicle.
