1966 Pontiac GTO Convertible - Tri-Power, Starlight Black over Red

Nineteen sixty-six is the year the GTO stopped borrowing the Tempest's body and got one of its own. The Coke-bottle profile, the stacked headlights, the louvered taillights - it is the shape most people picture when they hear the name, and Pontiac sold more GTOs that year than any other. In convertible form, finished in Starlight Black over a red interior, it is about as classic a combination as the muscle car era produced.

Under the hood is the option that matters most to collectors: Tri-Power. Three two-barrel carburetors atop the 389, with the outboard pair opening under hard throttle - a system that gave the GTO its signature two-stage personality and its reputation on the street. 1966 was the final year Pontiac offered it. GM shut down multiple carburetion across the division for 1967, which makes a Tri-Power '66 the end of a very short line.

The car has been highly detailed and carries new XAITA base coat clear coat paint, so the black presents with the depth that finish is known for and the chrome has the contrast to match. Black over red is unforgiving of shortcuts, which is exactly why it looks this good only when the work underneath has been done properly.

The option list reads the way a well-ordered GTO should. The console ties the interior together and gives the shifter its proper setting. Power steering and power brakes make a heavy-nosed big-block convertible genuinely pleasant to drive rather than a workout. The AM/FM radio was an uncommon upgrade over the standard AM unit. SS Rally wheels wrapped in redline tires complete the stance - the correct period look, and one that no reproduction wheel quite duplicates.

Three owners from new, which for a 60-year old convertible tells you something about how it has been kept.

Available now in our climate-controlled indoor showroom, with our in-house service department on site for inspection or questions.
