1965 Pontiac GTO Coupe - Special Order Tiger Gold, PHS
Documented
The 1965 GTO is the car that turned a clever option package into a
permanent nameplate. Pontiac sold more than 75,000 of them, the
stacked headlights arrived, and the model went from experiment to
institution in a single year. What almost none of those cars had
was this paint.
Tiger Gold was a special order finish, and this GTO is one of
roughly 100 built with it - a number that puts it in genuinely rare
territory for a model produced in volume. The PHS documentation is
what makes that claim stand up. Pontiac Historic Services records
verify how a car was originally built and equipped, and on a
special order color, that paperwork is the difference between a
story and a fact.
The car has been through a recent ground-up restoration. It has
been refinished in special order paint code 2-2 Tiger Gold in a
base/clear finish, with new chrome, trim, and weatherstripping
throughout - the details that separate a proper restoration from a
cosmetic one, and the areas where costs run hardest. Inside, a new
parchment bucket seat interior sets off the gold beautifully, and
the factory in-dash tachometer and gauge package is present, one of
the more desirable options on any early GTO.
Mechanically it has been built to be driven. A rebuilt 428
cubic-inch Tri-Power engine sits under the hood. It is a
period-appropriate Pontiac big-block with the three-two-barrel
setup the marque is known for, and it delivers considerably more
than the original 389 ever did. Behind it is a rebuilt Muncie
four-speed with the original Hurst shifter, feeding the original
Safe-T-Track rear axle with 3.90:1 gears. That is a serious
combination - short gearing, a limited-slip differential, and
Tri-Power carburetion.
Steering, suspension, and brakes are all new, and a new exhaust
system with correct splitter tips finishes the underside properly.
Rally I wheels and new redline radial tires complete the period
look.
A documented one-of-100 special order color, restored to this
standard, with an honest engine disclosure. That combination does
not surface often.
