Vehicle Description

1931 Ford Model A Pickup

"As in past years, the factory offered a comprehensive selection of commercial bodies for the 1930-1931 Ford Model A truck. Though the suspension of every 1930-1931 Ford Model A truck was the same as that of the long lived Model T, the Model A truck was superior in every way and far more sophisticated. Ford trucks packed more value for money than just about any others on the road, and Ford led Chevrolet in production from 1929 through 1931. Unfortunately, the Depression was deepening, and sales were dropping alarmingly. From 1.5 million units in 1929, production of Model A based trucks slipped to just a third of that total in 1931." For consignment, a 1931 Ford Model A pickup truck showing 32,931 miles, but the true miles are unknown. In a spectacular assembly of old and new, this near centenarian houses a 302ci V8 with electronic fuel injection and a Bluetooth stereo system. If this build went back in time, people in 1931 might report a bright red UFO driving down their street!

Exterior
Appropriately named, Fire Engine Red is two stage coverage adorns this vintage pickup and also colors the 15-inch steel wheels, complete with hubcaps and a red V8, and white wall tires with 2020 and 2021 date codes. Unlike the original configuration, this truck sits low on the wheels with the fenders hugging the curvature and joined by the broad running board between them. There's a slight rake to the stance which is ideal for a street rod like this, and the high tailgate proclaims its "Little Beast" status in white script. Other than the bright red paint, its standard fare up front with the headlights on an arcing lightbar, mesh grille with radiator cap atop, and twin banded chrome bumper. Bark infused hickory lines the bed, including the sidewalls and tailgate and emblazoned with an inlay of the Ford oval for good measure, and it all looks great. This one scores the coveted "zero" in terms of exterior imperfections.

Interior
Simple doors are handsomely dressed in dark gray vinyl, combining smooth and stitch patterns. The bench stretches the width and like the door, is in very nice condition. A Grant GT wood rimmed steering wheel fronts a body colored dash with instruments arranged in a linear fashion across the middle, the red needles of the Autometers picking up on the surrounding hue. Gray carpet covers the floor from which a Lokar shifter emerges. Down here, you can see the Holley Sniper controller while above our head, a tan headliner is clean and tight.

Drivetrain
A clean engine is a necessity as it's exposed on this truck, and indeed, it shows nicely with finned and polished valve covers and clean components. It's a 302ci V8 with that Holley Sniper electronic fuel injection system, tied to a C4 3-speed automatic transmission that routes power to the Ford 8" in the back. Headers are on board and the truck runs on a 12 volt system.

Undercarriage
It's clean under here as well where the dual exhaust runs through FlowMaster mufflers and then turns east and west to exit ahead of each rear wheel. Disc brakes up front, drums in the rear and suspension includes a transverse leaf spring ahead of us, and ladder bars with coil overs under the bed in back.

Drive-Ability
This early compact truck comes to life in a hurry thanks to injection and the V8 puts out a healthy growl from both sides of the rig. Good power, straight tracking, fun handling; all observed on our short trip around the test loop. And it only gets better from there as all functions on this nice build work as they should. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.

This is one hot little Fire Engine Red truck; a fantastic exterior, an updated fueling system, and a comfortable cabin all worth putting this one on your radar. There may be others around, but we've seen very few with this exact configuration and of course, a hickory bed is like icing on the cake!
