Model History

The 1958 Pontiac Chieftain was a bold expression of late-1950s American automotive design, blending power, style, and innovation. As part of Pontiac’s full-size lineup, the Chieftain received a major restyling for 1958, featuring dramatic tailfins, an extended chrome-laden front grille, and dual headlamps—reflecting the era’s fascination with jet-age styling. This model year was also the last for the Chieftain name, as Pontiac prepared to introduce the Catalina as a separate series in 1959.

Built on a longer, lower, and wider chassis, the 1958 Chieftain offered a roomier interior and a smoother ride. It was available in several body styles, including sedans, coupes, and station wagons. Under the hood, it came equipped with Pontiac’s powerful 370 cubic-inch V8 engine, available in various configurations with up to 330 horsepower in performance variants.

Despite a challenging year for the auto industry due to a national recession, the 1958 Chieftain stood out for its presence and performance. Today, it is remembered as a stylish and transitional model that closed the chapter on the Chieftain line while ushering in a new era of Pontiac design and engineering.
