For Sale at Auction: 1901 Oldsmobile Series 20 in Owls Head, Maine

Vehicle Description

This full-size Likamobile steam car is a fascinating recreation of the pioneering automobiles that helped define the earliest years of motoring. Designed as a faithful representation of the legendary 1901 Locomobile, this example was manufactured as a mechanical kit by Model Works of England and completed by its owner in October 2011. Combining period-correct styling with modern engineering improvements for safety and reliability, this unique steam-powered vehicle offers a rare opportunity to acquire a fully operational example of one of the automotive world's earliest designs. Produced between 2005 and 2011, Model Works' Likamobile kits were engineered as full-size, roadworthy steam vehicles that closely replicate the appearance and driving experience of the original 1901 Locomobile while incorporating modern materials and safety-conscious components. This example was received by the current owner in 2006, completed in 2011, and has been regularly driven and enjoyed locally since completion. It is reported to run, drive, and is currently registered for road use. The vehicle features a tubular steel chassis and a handcrafted wooden body with decorative turned spindles mounted over a steel frame. Steering is provided through an Ackermann-style tiller system, while modern four-wheel disc brakes offer improved stopping capability over the original design. Power comes from a 2.25-inch bore, 3-inch stroke twin-cylinder steam engine equipped with modified Hackworth valve gear and supplied by twin mechanical water pumps. Steam is generated by a self-regulating automatic ignition Winslow boiler, providing enhanced operational safety while maintaining the character of an early steam automobile. Presentation throughout reflects the vehicle's purpose-built nature as a functional steam-powered touring car. The wooden coachwork, exposed mechanical components, brass fittings, and period-inspired detailing create an authentic appearance reminiscent of the dawn of the automobile age. The owner estimates a top speed of approximately 25 to 30 miles per hour, making it well suited for exhibitions, parades, steam gatherings, and collector events. The original Locomobile was among the most successful steam-powered automobiles of the early twentieth century, helping introduce personal transportation to a rapidly changing world. Today, operational steam vehicles remain exceptionally uncommon, making quality recreations such as this Likamobile highly desirable among collectors of early automotive technology and steam-powered machinery. Whether destined for a steam enthusiast, collector of unusual vehicles, museum display, or participant in historic motoring events, this fully functional Likamobile offers a rare chance to experience the sights, sounds, and engineering of automotive history in a practical and enjoyable package.
