For Sale at Auction: 2000 Honda Insight in Owls Head, Maine

Vehicle Description

Offered with No Reserve is this unique and highly documented 2000 Honda Insight, a first-generation hybrid that combines innovative engineering with a fascinating ownership history. Purchased in 2002 by noted Electrathon racer and builder C. Michael Lewis with just 5,694 miles showing, this Insight has remained in enthusiast ownership for more than two decades. Beyond its significance as one of Honda's pioneering hybrid vehicles, this example stands apart through its custom appearance, motorsports connections, and extensive cross-country travels supporting Lewis' record-setting Electrathon racing program. Powered by Honda's fuel-efficient hybrid drivetrain and paired with a manual transmission, this Insight benefited from a complete replacement of the hybrid battery pack in 2020 at 88,478 miles. A new starter battery was installed in 2025. Originally finished in red, the car was professionally refinished by Michael Lewis in 2007 in a distinctive copper and gray color scheme designed to match his Electrathon race car and support trailer. Michael Lewis was well known in the Electrathon community for designing, building, and racing all-electric competition vehicles. He continues to hold the national speed record for the fastest Electrathon race car, and one of his record-setting creations is currently displayed at the Owls Head Transportation Museum. This Insight served as his tow vehicle, transporting Electrathon race cars and equipment to events throughout the United States, including a trip to the Bonneville Salt Flats in 2008. Adding further to its unique story, Lewis drove this Insight during the Bonneville Speed Trials, where it achieved a recorded speed of 97 mph on the salt flats. The vehicle is also accompanied by a custom rear spoiler designed and fabricated by Lewis himself, providing a one-of-a-kind connection to his engineering and racing accomplishments. The first-generation Honda Insight remains an important milestone in automotive history as one of the earliest mass-produced hybrid vehicles available in the United States. Its lightweight aluminum construction, aerodynamic design, and remarkable fuel efficiency helped establish Honda as a leader in hybrid technology and continue to make these cars increasingly appreciated by collectors and enthusiasts today. Ideal for collectors of alternative-fuel vehicles, Honda enthusiasts, or anyone seeking a truly distinctive hybrid with documented provenance, this 2000 Honda Insight offers an unusual combination of innovation, performance history, and personal craftsmanship. Its long-term ownership, Bonneville connection, and association with a nationally recognized Electrathon competitor make it a compelling opportunity at auction. Sold with a registration.
