For Sale at Auction: 1939 Ford Deluxe in Owls Head, Maine

Vehicle Description

Offered with No Reserve is this customized 1939 Ford Deluxe Coupe, a period-style mild hot rod that has evolved over decades of ownership. Under the hood is a late-1950s Chevrolet 283ci small-block V8, identified by its "D" engine suffix as a passenger car engine, paired to the original-style Ford three-speed manual transmission through a Hurst-style front saddle motor mount and adapter plate. The car is also equipped with a desirable Columbia two-speed rear axle and has been converted to a 12-volt electrical system. The Ford was repainted Cadillac Brown in the 1980s while in Denver, Colorado, before making its way to Connecticut, where it remained for many years. Around 1995, it received additional updates including a four-barrel carburetor, front disc brakes, original-style steel wheels with hubcaps and trim rings, and radial tires. The car was enjoyed at regional events, including at least one trip to the Lead East nostalgia hot rod gathering in New Jersey. The current owner acquired the car in 2005 after it had been parked with a failed transmission. A rebuilt transmission was installed, the car was registered in Connecticut, and it has since seen only limited use. This Ford is best suited as a project for an enthusiast who appreciates traditional 1960s-era hot rods and is prepared to continue its mechanical restoration. The engine is tired, with one cylinder showing approximately 55 pounds of compression, and it tends to run hot in traffic. The brakes are soft, the tires are well beyond their recommended service life, the clutch chatters in reverse, and the transmission pops out of second gear when decelerating. The steering is stiff, the original lever shocks are weak, and the speedometer is currently inoperative. True mileage is unknown, as the Columbia rear axle affects speedometer readings when engaged in high range. Cosmetically, the car remains an attractive driver from a distance, though the aging paint shows clear coat failure and the windows exhibit delamination. It starts, runs, and drives, but due to its mechanical condition and braking performance, it is not recommended for extended trips or highway use. Prospective bidders should also be aware of the vehicle's most significant issue: a bent frame resulting from damage believed to have occurred decades ago. Evidence suggests the car struck an immovable object, causing damage to the driver's side running board and frame, ultimately requiring replacement of the driver's side rear quarter panel and repairs to the rear fender. Although the car has reportedly been driven in this condition for more than 45 years, it will possibly need further attention, servicing and inspection. This 1939 Ford Deluxe Coupe represents an opportunity to acquire a vintage hot rod with decades of history, period modifications, and plenty of character. It is offered with No Reserve and sold with a restoration.
