Toyota divided the Land Cruiser family into three series. The most basic version is the 'heavy duty' series, which prioritizes functionality, durability and off-road capabilities over comfort or technology. It is also characterized by flatter steel body panels and a near vertical greenhouse. Models considered as 'heavy-duty' by Toyota are the BJ, FJ, 20, 40 and 70 series.

Exterior
Charcoal Gray coats the body, fronted by a chrome bezel around the grille and single headlights under a distinct hood appearing narrow thanks to wide horizontal fenders. The tall boxy design is what vintage SUVs are all about, displayed here with large windows throughout and a 60/40 split double door for easy access and uniquely configured tail light and an offset bumper step add to the visual and functional interest. 15-inch chrome wheels carry all terrain tires with a late 2021 date code. While we're in profile, we note the attractive rear vents, Turbo decals, and coveted Land Cruiser callouts on the front fenders, all making for a handsome design. Imperfections include some cracking paint on the hood, scuffs, various scratches and chips all fairly minor.

Interior
Toyota uses gray herringbone tweed cloth for chairs and door panel inserts while bolsters and surrounding door panels use a gray vinyl, with some slight tears in the passenger door. Our Turbo insignia returns on the bucket seats and the rear bench is straight and clean. A simple left hand drive black steering wheel fronts an equally simple instrument cluster and towards the center, a degree indicator and altimeter will be an interesting read in the hills of Beverly, or in the Pocono Mountains. Below it, an AM/FM/CD radio and vent lever panel. Naturally, our passenger gets a grab handle for when things get rough while the wide tunnel on the floor is adorned with the tall shifter and shorter range selector. Gray carpet covers the floor in front and a thicker pile is found in the cargo area where we notice a tear in the rear seat vinyl. A tan headliner is clean and intact.

Drivetrain
A flip of the hood and we are greeted with a slightly corroded, (typical for aluminum cast parts), 3.4L I-4 cylinder Turbo Diesel. It is fed by EFI and there is a 5-speed manual transmission on the back with 3.90 gears on both front and rear differentials. This rig has 120 horsepower, power brakes and power steering.

Undercarriage
Minor surface rust is typical on this otherwise clean underside with a skid plate that protects the transfer case. A single exhaust snakes its way through a stock style muffler and out the back while power brakes, disc in front and drums in the back, occupy the four wheels. Leaf spring suspension is utilized front and rear.

Drive-Ability
The diesel fires right up and provides a nice ride with a view that rivals forest fire lookout towers! It has decent acceleration, straight tracking and an airy cabin. The brake lights are not working but all other functions operate as they should. Here we have a fine example of 4x4 motoring, in long lasting diesel configuration.
