For Sale: 1991 Mercedes-Benz 420SEL in Morgantown, Pennsylvania

Vehicle Description

1991 Mercedes Benz 420SEL 4 Door Sedan

"The 420SEL was a variant for the W126 Mercedes-Benz S-Class Sedan. Introduced for the 1986 model year, the 420 SEL was powered by Mercedes' M116.965 V8 engine. This 4.2L V8 unit sent power through manual or automatic transmission options to the rear wheels. The 'E' designation in 'SEL' refers to the 420 SEL's fuel injection as Einspritzmotor means fuel injected engine in German, whereas the 'L' refers to the long wheelbase. Mercedes-Benz produced the 420SEL until 1991, when the variant was discontinued." Classic.com

For consignment, a 1991 Mercedes Benz 420SEL 4 door sedan showing 142,277 miles, but the true miles are unknown. 1991 was the final year for the 420. This white example shows some age but represents a lot of car and what some consider last of the great flagship sedans.

Exterior
Graceful two tone coverage adorns this Benz with the Arctic White body over gray cladding. Long rear doors mean easy access for passengers and the long overhang means there's likely some sizable dimensions in the trunk. The round cornered square grille is classically Mercedes and of course, is topped with the three pointed star. You know you've arrived when your headlights have their own wipers, as they do here, and your tail lights have distinct ridges and a familiar color configuration. 15-inch Mercedes wheels are a wonderful design, even as they have lost some of their original luster. Other imperfections include paint off of the cladding, general fading and chipping of plastic elements, chips, scratches, deplating of the bumper chrome and some surface rust, rust on fender where it underscores the marker light, dullness to the paint and degeneration of clear coat on horizontal surfaces, and stained haziness on the inside of the windshield.

Interior
Blue leather stitched inserts dress the blue doors with wood accent plates around the handles, on par for a luxury car and visually pleasing and all four present in nice condition. The front seats tell a different story with some wear, especially the driver's bucket which shows wear through and holes. The rear bench remains plump with padding and perforated blue leather. The control area is simple and straightforward, a black steering wheel fronting an instrument cluster where three circles and a row of indicator lights tell you everything you need to know. Striped wood covers the mid panel band and the center stack which holds the A/C switchgear and AM/FM/Cassette radio. Window switches and the shifter reside in the center console where the urethane shows some cracking over the wood, common in areas where sun exposure is typical. Plush blue carpet is protected by mats that have taken the brunt of use and show fading while the light headliner, sunroof, and overhead console present in nice condition. Carpet finished the entire trunk which shows some use but is fully intact.

Drivetrain
Showing in driver quality condition, here is the 4.2 liter SOHC V8 rated at 201 horsepower, fuel injected, and mated to a 4-speed automatic transmission. Power is routed to the rear wheels and an axle with 2.47 gears.

Undercarriage
Driver quality here as well with surface rust, residual oil and soot, and typical metal oxidation. We also note rust on a cladding mounting bracket. Dual exhaust travels in tandem through a stock style muffler and power disc brakes are on all four wheels. The fully independent suspension includes Macpherson struts in front and coil springs in back.

Drive-ability
Nothing quite like a classic Mercedes and yes, 1991 was a long time ago! Our ten year old tires show some dryness so we'll keep things tame and the car still provides a smooth and capable ride and as always, has a tank-like feel in its solidity. Of note is the heater blower, clock, radio, and driver's front window all not working, but all other functions operate as they should. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.

You can't argue with great styling and this car still has an air of opulence and wealth, even with the love marks! It's a big car with a clean and attractive interior and plenty of room for your family, college roommates, or real estate customers!
