Vehicle Description

1970 Chevrolet Malibu Chevelle SS Convertible Tribute

"The hardest thing about owning a Chevelle is making up your mind which model best fits the bill. To help get you off the horns of this dilemma, here are some facts which hopefully should lead to a decision. There are four Malibu models to choose from: sport coupe, sports sedan, convertible, and 4 door sedan. The 1970 Chevelle by Chevrolet, the performance starts as soon as you're seated!" From the 1970 brochure.

For consignment, a 1970 Chevrolet Malibu Chevelle SS convertible showing 3,956 miles, but the true miles are unknown. This car was subject to a body off, rotisserie restoration during which chrome, seals, trim, glass as well as the mechanics were addressed. The no expense spared build has yielded a long list of car show awards and some magazine appearances.

Exterior
We've seen Chevelles in just about every color and this two stage Medium Teal Blue Metallic is a stunner, especially when mated with the Pearl White painted stripe that stretches perfectly over the hood and decklid. It also takes in some of the epic cowl hood and induction vent and the callout that tells you what you're looking at. SS call outs on the front fenders, of course, with 454 included and while we're in profile, we note matching calipers on the disc brakes at both ends of the car! The white canvas top is in fantastic condition as is the metalwork on this Chevrolet and the 15-inch polished American Racing Torque Thrust wheels bring it all together and carry staggered tires with a mid 2023 date code. Imperfections are few and include a chip on a hood corner and door edge, light inclusions, a drop of paint run, a few other minor chips most of which are touched up, and a crack in one headlight lens.

Interior
The patterns included in the white vinyl doors are expertly repeated in the finished trunk, itself a show worthy compartment and the doors, trim, and trunk are in excellent condition. The white seats, buckets in front, bench in back, also look fresh and clean, providing a ticket back to 1970 for five occupants. A chrome spoked steering wheel is on a tilt column it shared with a tachometer and fronts a super clean dashboard with standard gauges and AM/FM/8-track radio, augmented by a triple gauge pack underneath. Our dash pad is spotless and so is the billet faceplate in the center console from which the Hurst shifter emerges with a white ball grip. Black carpet below and in the trunk, and the underside of the convertible top are in great shape.

Drivetrain
Look up "gleaming" in the dictionary and you might find an image of this engine bay. Here we have a reworked 454ci GMPP crate V8 with a 4-barrel carburetor and a consignor stated 550 horsepower. Lots of chrome, lots of glossy teal paint, and clean surfaces render this one show worthy. It's mated to a Tremec 3650 5-speed manual transmission that routes power to the 12 bolt rear axle. There are headers here as well as factory optioned power steering, brakes and air conditioning.

Undercarriage
Clean topside, clean interior, clean engine. The bases are loaded, and the underside hits one out of the park for a grand slam! Spectacularly clean and also show worthy, we have painted, powder coated, and chromed surfaces throughout and it's spotless. Power disc brakes as mentioned earlier, are on all four wheels and the dual exhaust travels through stainless MagnaFlow mufflers, finally exiting through chrome tips out back. Suspension consists of coil springs front and rear with a 4 link included in back.

Drive-Ability
The big V8 starts without hesitation and releases an exhaust note worthy of a muscle car from this era. The car has obvious power underfoot, tracks straight, and stops on the proverbial dime. We note the factory tachometer, reverse lights, and clock are not working. The left rear window is out of track even as the motor for it still runs. All other functions operate as they should. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.

At the Muscle Car and Corvette Nationals, this car scored a 997 out of 1000, according to our consignor. It's easy to see why. Attention was given to every nut and bolt and has resulted in a fantastic show car and outstanding representative of the muscle car glory days.
