1957 Ford Thunderbird - D-Code 312 V8
The 1957 Ford Thunderbird represents the final and most refined
year of the first-generation "Baby Birds," combining unmistakable
styling, V8 performance, and the upscale appointments that helped
establish the Thunderbird as an American icon. Finished today in
beautiful black, this example presents as a clean, attractive
driver-quality classic that is ready for weekend cruising, local
car shows, or simply enjoying with the top down.
The glossy black exterior is complemented beautifully by Ford-style
chrome wire wheels wrapped in classic wide whitewall tires, giving
the car the timeless appearance these early Thunderbirds are known
for. The paint presents very well overall, showing only minor
imperfections consistent with a well-maintained driver-quality
classic. There is no visible bubbling in the finish, and the body
displays clean, straight lines throughout. A professional paint
correction and detail could further enhance the already attractive
depth and shine of the black finish.
According to its original data plate and VIN D7FH187840, this
Thunderbird was built at Ford's Dearborn, Michigan assembly plant
and was originally equipped with the desirable D-Code 312 cubic
inch Thunderbird V8 with a single 4-barrel carburetor. The 312
remains in place today with a 4-barrel carburetor and is backed by
a smooth-shifting automatic transmission. Power steering and power
brakes make this Thunderbird comfortable and easy to drive while
still providing the unmistakable character of a 1950s Ford V8.
The data plate provides some additional interesting history on this
car. It indicates that the Thunderbird was originally finished in
Colonial White (Paint Code E) with a Flame Red vinyl interior (Trim
Code XH). The car has since been refinished in its current black
exterior and now features a handsome black and white vinyl
interior. Its scheduled production date was January 10, 1957, and
the car was assigned to Ford's Jacksonville sales district, making
the original data plate an interesting piece of its history.
Inside, the black and white vinyl interior presents nicely and
retains the classic Thunderbird appearance. The original-style
dashboard, gauges, and trim remain in place, along with Thunderbird
rubber floor mats. The factory radio is still installed but is
currently inoperable. The odometer currently displays 34,504 miles,
although actual mileage is unknown due to the vehicle's age.
The black vinyl convertible soft top presents nicely overall and
operates as intended. There is one small pinhole tear in the
material, as shown in the accompanying photos, but otherwise the
top remains in attractive condition. Also included with the sale is
an aftermarket removable hardtop manufactured by Parish Plastics.
The hardtop is complete but will require refinishing should the
next owner wish to restore and install it.
One of the strongest features of this Thunderbird is its
exceptionally solid underside. The car has reportedly been stored
indoors during inclement weather, helping preserve it over the
years. The underbody is very clean and solid with no significant
rust or rot concerns evident, providing an excellent foundation for
continued enjoyment.
Mechanically, this Thunderbird runs and drives exceptionally well.
The combination of the 312ci D-Code V8, automatic transmission,
power steering, and power brakes makes it an enjoyable classic that
can be driven and appreciated immediately while still offering
opportunities for further detailing or improvements if desired.
