For Sale: 1989 Ford Ranger in Morgantown, Pennsylvania

Vehicle Description

1989 Ford Ranger XLT 4x2 Supercab Pickup

"No longer content to sell a rebadged, lightly restyled Mazda as the Courier, Ford applied the Ranger name to its new compact pickup. And 11 years later, it began building the Mazda B-series based on the Ranger. Although the Ranger grew slightly over its nearly 30 year run, which included 17 straight atop the compact sales charts, it remained a compact, with a variety of four and six cylinder engines covering 72 to 207 horses plus one electric model." Motortrend.com

For consignment, a 1989 Ford Ranger XLT 4x2 supercab pickup truck with a title verified 80,985 actual miles. It's no surprise that Motor Trend's Truck of the Year for 2026 is the Ford Maverick as many Americans have historically favored smaller, more nimble pickup trucks over the years. Both the Ranger and the Maverick were commercial successes.

Exterior
Two tone was not uncommon in the era and here we have Cabernet Red over Silver Metallic and the silver arches over the wheels, delineated by a band of gray intersected by red. Composite headlights sit flush, an improvement over the '88 model, and bookend an egg crate grille with the blue oval affixed dead center. Chrome was still happening in '89 and covers the bumpers and wide side mirrors while 14-inch factory aluminum wheels exhibit a shine of their own and are wrapped in 70 series tires with a late 2022 date code. The bed is clean and covered with a fitted, rubberized mat. Overall, the body is in nice, mostly rust free condition, but not without some evidence of age. The tailgate was exposed from under a carport and suffers from some oxidation, missing trim and some blistering on the bottom edge. The hood and roof surfaces have dulled with oxidation. Other imperfections include abrasions on the top of the bed, deglazing on the windshield, scratches, scuffs, peeling stripes, and blistering on the fender lips.

Interior
Varying shade of gray and materials adorn the door panels which present in very clean condition and are smartly designed. Cloth covers the unique 70/30 split bench with gray velour headers and both sides are nice, with sizable storage available and jump seats available behind them. A simple black steering wheel front an all black instrument cluster and dash with clean, basic gauges, an AM/FM/Cassette radio, and the A/C panel, all framed in simulated burlwood trim. Gray carpet is clean below and the foam backed headliner is also fully intact and fresh looking.

Drivetrain
A clean engine bay is usually the sign of a well cared for vehicle and this one holds a 2.9 liter V6, fuel injected and rated at 140 horsepower. It's mated to an A4LD 4-speed automatic transmission that routes power to the 7.5" axle with 3.45 gears.

Undercarriage
The underside is more on the driver quality side of things with some typical surface rust, metal oxidation and some residual oil, but shows as structurally solid. The single exhaust travels through a stock style muffler and suspension consists of coil springs and radius arms up front and good old leaf springs in back. Brakes are divided as power disc and power drum, front and back respectively.

Drive-Ability
We find a quick starter that runs well, tracks straight, and provides a comfortable cabin made to feel roomy with the extended cab and a picture window out back for good visibility. We note the passenger's window will not go back up even as the motor is running and the truck could benefit from a new set of shock absorbers. All other functions operate as intended. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.

The days of body on frame are passing us by, but back in the day, these Rangers, with their various configurations, were everywhere and nearly 500,000 were produced in 1989. If you're looking for the Goldilocks of trucks, one that's just right, combining relatively modern comfort with vintage reliability and styling, this XLT might be for you!
