This 1970 Dodge Challenger R/T is finished in Top Banana, one of
Dodge's High Impact colors introduced for 1970 as part of a lineup
so deliberately outrageous that the names were as memorable as the
paint. Green Go, Go Mango, Plum Crazy, Top Banana, these were
colors engineered specifically to be impossible to ignore, and on a
Challenger R/T they deliver exactly what they promised. White
leather bucket seats, black dash, black carpet, and wood interior
accents give the cabin a clean, bold contrast that suits the
exterior without competing with it. Under the hood is a 426 Hemi
V8, the most powerful engine Dodge offered in the Challenger,
backed by the three-speed TorqueFlite automatic and power brakes.
The engine is not numbers matching to this car, but a Hemi under
the hood of a Top Banana R/T is a combination that is as visually
and mechanically compelling as the first-generation Challenger
gets.
Dodge built only 287 Hemi Challengers in 1970 across all body
styles combined, making the original Hemi R/T one of the rarest
factory configurations of the first-year car. The 426 Hemi produced
425 horsepower from the factory with two four-barrel carburetors on
a cross-ram intake, and it earned a reputation on the street and at
the dragstrip that no other Mopar engine has matched before or
since. By 1971 the Hemi was gone from the Challenger entirely,
which gives every 1970 Hemi car a finality that adds to the
significance of the engine regardless of its matching status.
The interior is clean throughout with the white leather buckets in
good shape and the wood accents carrying through the cabin
consistently. The black carpet and black dash keep the focus on the
driver without cluttering the cockpit, and the TorqueFlite backs up
the Hemi with one of the most proven automatic transmissions
Chrysler ever built.
A Top Banana Challenger R/T with a Hemi under the hood is a car
that does not require a long sales pitch. The color, the badge, and
the engine say everything that needs to be said.
