The 429 Thunderjet was brand new for 1969, part of Ford's all-new 385 engine family that was engineered from a clean sheet and shared almost nothing with the 428 Cobra Jet it ran alongside in the lineup despite their nearly identical displacement. The 1969 500 XL was Ford's most significant redesign of the full-size performance lineup in years, arriving on an all-new longer wheelbase with a completely new body and the SportsRoof and convertible as the only available body styles.
