This 1969 Ford 500 XL Convertible is finished in Dark Aqua Metallic
with a white convertible top and black vinyl interior with wood
trim throughout, a combination that is striking, period-correct,
and well suited to a full-size open-top car of this era. Under the
hood is the 429 cubic inch Thunderjet V8 producing 360 horsepower
through a four-barrel carburetor, backed by the three-speed
SelectShift Cruise-O-Matic automatic. The 429 Thunderjet was brand
new for 1969, part of Ford's all-new 385 engine family that was
engineered from a clean sheet and shared almost nothing with the
428 Cobra Jet it ran alongside in the lineup despite their nearly
identical displacement. It is a big, torquey, smooth engine that
moves a full-size convertible with the kind of effortless authority
the XL was designed around.
The 1969 500 XL was Ford's most significant redesign of the
full-size performance lineup in years, arriving on an all-new
longer wheelbase with a completely new body and the SportsRoof and
convertible as the only available body styles. Ford's own
advertising called it the sportiest, best-handling Ford XL in
history and dared buyers to drive it and find out. The convertible
was the rarer and more desirable of the two body styles, and in
Dark Aqua Metallic with the 429 four-barrel it represents the top
of what the 1969 500 XL offered.
This car has been gone through comprehensively and the work list
speaks for itself. A new convertible top, new exhaust, new starter,
new ignition coil, plugs, wires, brakes, water pump, hoses,
thermostat, rear brake lines, fuel filter, fuel sending unit, front
brake hoses, brake booster, and new convertible top hydraulic
cylinders have all been addressed. This is not a car that has been
polished up for photographs. It has been properly serviced and
sorted from one end to the other.
A Dark Aqua 429 XL convertible that has been mechanically refreshed
throughout is the kind of find that does not stay available long
once the right buyer sees it.
