For Sale: 1973 AM General DJ in Morgantown, Pennsylvania

Vehicle Description

1973 AM General DJ 5CPostal Jeep

The DJ-5 series, including the DJ 5C, remained in heavy use by the USPS until they were largely replaced by the Grumman LLV in the mid 1980s, the first two vehicles commissioned specifically by the postal service. Today, they are popular among automotive enthusiasts as restoration projects, retro styled mail delivery vehicles, or quirky town cruisers due to their distinct look and open door capability.

For consignment, a 1973 AM General DJ 5CPostal Jeep showing 70,041 miles, but the true miles are unknown. This one presents in barn find condition, has no keys, and if your letter never got delivered, it's possible it fell through the cracks of this former service vehicle.

Exterior
Remnants of white paint remain but are now coupled with rust, oxidized paint, and flaky blue remains on the hood. The five slot grille differs from typical Jeeps and fronts this recognizable vehicle, various iterations of which were used by the post office for decades. Extended side mirrors remain on the driver's side which in this case, is the right side, closest to your mailbox. All glass except the windshield is whole and rear light lenses are in place, but the body suffers from severe rust with several panels opened through.

Interior
These were sparse from the beginning and this one is weathered inside with two black vinyl bucket seats that show fading and cracking. The rim of the black steering wheel is cracked at the hub and fronts a simple dash with single gauge and a series of knobs and toggles, all with patina. The shifter rises from the floor suffering from peeling paint and a wheel well in the back has a rust hole. The headliner has seen better days and a fan and dome light are still in place.

Drivetrain
Under the hood is a dirty but complete looking AMC 232ci inline six cylinder rated at 100 horsepower. It has a 1-barrel carburetor and is mated to an M11 3-speed automatic transmission. Unlike the majority of Jeeps in the world, 5C's were two wheel drive and there's a Dana 44 in the back to accept driveshaft rotation.

Undercarriage
It's all here; advanced surface rust, deep patina, residual oil, and some flaking rust. For components, the Jeep has drum brakes at all four wheels, a single exhaust and stock style muffler, and leaf springs front and rear.

Drive-Ability
There are no keys associated with this vehicle.

George Bernard Shaw wrote, "Some men see things as they are, and ask why. I dream of things that never were, and ask why not.". Whichever camp you're in, there's no denying the historical significance of Jeeps in the postal service and this one may offer some interesting options for use.
