Steve Saleen founded his company in 1983 with a straightforward
mission: take the Ford Mustang and make it better in every
measurable way. By 2000 he had built enough of a reputation that
his cars were no longer considered modified Mustangs. They were
considered Saleens. Only a few S281 coupes were built in the 2000
model year, and this one carries build number 00-0667, making its
place in the production record documented and specific. It is
finished in Laser Red Metallic with black leather inside, and it
has been built further still with a ProCharger centrifugal
supercharger on top of the already performance-tuned 4.6 liter
V8.
Under the hood the 4.6 liter V8 comes with the Saleen Racecraft
suspension package, performance exhaust, and aerodynamic bodywork
already in place from the factory. The ProCharger adds forced
induction on top of that foundation, pushing output well beyond
what Saleen sent it out with. The five-speed manual keeps the
driver fully connected to every bit of it, and the A-pillar fuel,
boost, and air-fuel ratio gauges give a real-time read on exactly
what the ProCharger is doing under load.
Inside, the black leather cabin carries Saleen-specific aluminum
interior knobs and switches throughout, details that immediately
distinguish it from any standard Mustang interior. The Mach 460
sound system handles the audio, and the overall feel of the cabin
is that of a car that was re-engineered with a specific purpose in
mind, not just dressed up.
2000 was also the year Saleen captured the GTO Drivers Championship
in the inaugural Grand American Road Racing season, which gives the
company's road cars from that year an added layer of racing
credibility. A Laser Red S281 with the ProCharger, the five-speed,
and a documented build number is a rare and specific car from a
year when Saleen was at the top of their game.
