Demands for increased power for its medium-sized saloon had
prompted BMW to introduce the original 2002 in 1968, and it was the
fuel-injected 2002tii that provided the basis for the model's
ultimate expression - the Turbo - which was readily distinguishable
by its deep front air dam, wheel arch extensions and boot-mounted
spoiler. This top-of-the-range model had been introduced following
a successful racing program that saw a works entered, turbocharger
equipped 2002 win the 1969 European Touring Car Championship in the
hands of Dieter Quester. Faced with having to compete against the
Porsche 911 & Alfa Romeo GTA, BMW opted for 'bolt on' horsepower
courtesy of a turbocharger in a compact package resulted in
outstanding performance and the fastest and most exciting
medium-sized sports saloon of its day. Produced for the 1973/74
season, this rare model is rightly regarded as a modern classic and
highly sought after.
The birth of BMW Motorsports as we know it today.
Chassis 4290236 was completed on March 3, 1974 in Chamonix (085)
paint over customary black upholstery with a 4-speed transmission
and a revered factory manual sunroof. BMW Classic Certificate 6632
confirms the Turbo was delivered new on March 22nd through BMW
Italia S.p.A of Palazzolo/Verona, Italy. The 2002 was later
discovered near Torino, Italy, where it had been garage parked
since 1982. The car was acquired by marque and model experts in The
Netherlands, who would commission a complete rotisserie restoration
to concours standards under the guidance of their highly
experienced team.
Starting with a well preserved and solid "first-paint" example,
restoration highlights included:
• A through, bare-metal Paintjob - Outside, inside, underside
• Reassembled with all new OEM parts. New Glass, Rubbers, and
Chrome
• Correct Seals, Trim, Lights, Grilles, Emblems, Spoilers, and
Decals
• A complete rebuild of the matching-numbers engine with new
Pistons, Bearings, Seals, etc.
• Rebuilt Injection, Injectors, Ignition, Turbo, Starter,
Alternator, etc.
• Rebuilt Gearbox
• Powdercoated Axles & New Hardware, Bushings, Joints, Rods, and
Rubbers
• All new Bearings, Bilstein Shocks, Springs, and Shafts
• R&R brake system with New/Rebuilt Master Cylinder, Rotors,
Pads, Calipers, Hoses and Lines
With less than 600 recorded kilometers on the odometer, this
particular 2002 presents exceptionally well in original form and
livery - ready for spirited touring or concours display at a
moment's notice. Fit and finish is equally as impressive and
correct, whether viewed from the exterior, cabin, undercarriage,
engine bay or luggage compartment. All lights, electronics and
safety equipment are in proper working order. A Blaupunkt Frankfurt
radio complements
the interior's sunroof. The rear trunk contains a correct type
steel spare wheel and jack assembly, neatly stowed away. Alpina
wheels are shod with 185/70R13 tires, complementing the period
attire and stance.
This 2002 fully exemplifies quality craftsmanship, presentation,
feel, and panache of the iconic Turbo, and is accompanied by
Owner's Manual Turbo Supplement (copy), BMW Classic Certificate of
Authenticity, and Accessories. Additionally, the Turbo has yet to
be concours shown and will surely provide an abundance of
opportunities for its next caretaker to enjoy. At DriverSource we
are BMW enthusiasts and have owned several great and rare examples
of the marque - simply put this is amongst the finest 2002 Turbo's
we have had the pleasure of offering (Now Twice!). Available for
