Amazing 1987 4Runner with legendary Toyota 5VZ engine swap (3.4L dual overhead cam V-6) WITH Magnuson supercharger.
I’ll just list everything we did with the build and hope I don’t leave anything out…
1) Original 1987 4Runner DLX Survivor (Texas truck)
2) 3.4L 5VZ swap engine from 1996 Toyota Tacoma Base 4WD. 160K original miles on the Tacoma. Engine was put on a stand and meticulously rebuilt because we were adding the supercharger. Opened the motor and to our delight, it was IMMACULATE with no scorching or scarring. Replaced rings and bearings and there was no need to replace the factory forged pistons and connecting rods. Re-adjusted the valve lash to spec and dropped the motor in the 1987 with custom motor mounts and light fab modifications.
2) Added a Magnuson supercharger and have been running it with the OEM 5VZ fuel system just fine. Might run even better if you decide to add a standalone Haltech fuel system!
3) 3VZ transmission from Japan from a 1990 4Runner with 60,000 original miles.
4) Shortened the front drive shaft and lengthened the rear drive both completely rebuilt with high-quality parts and professionally balanced both drive shafts.
5) Rebuilt front end with new front axle shafts, bearings, boots, etc…
6) Complete new steering linkage, rebuilt OEM steering box, new power steering pump and lines. Replaced all tie rods and ball joints.
7) 4” Rough Country complete suspension lift and added a 2” body lift so the hood would clear the supercharger on the 5VZ engine.
8) New complete modernized a/c system with custom made a/c lines and R134a a/c conversion.
9) All new engine accessories using OEM Toyota Denso accessories. (Alternator, starter, pulleys, etc…) Also entire braking system replaced with factory style brakes.
10) Custom stainless steel fuel crossover lines.
11) Complete new custom exhaust from engine to tailpipe tip with resonator and 3-chamber muffler.
12) New paint (2 base coats plus three clear coats).
14) Modern DOT approved LED headlights. 16” front triple row LED light bar recessed in front bumper. And 4” rear spot light recess mounted in center of rear bumper.
INTERIOR:
15) Stripped empty then new Dynomat from front seats to firewall. Also added Dynomat and insulation to front doors. Sprayed TWO COATS of sound-dampening LizardSkin from the front seats all the way back to the tailgate and on walls from b-pillar to tailgate. Then final Line-X Premium bed-liner behind the 2nd row seat. Factory roll bar was also professionally painted to gloss black with two base coats and 3 clear coats.
16) Original 1987 seats were sent off for custom re-padding and custom-cut and stitched vinyl upholstery.
17) New carpet with extra-thick padding for additional sound dampening.
18) Dash from 1996 Tacoma was stripped and re-dyed to gray and then retro-fitted into the 1987 with the 1996 engine harness and dash harness and utilized the 1996 Tacoma PCM. All lights were replaced on the backside of the gage cluster and a/c control unit.
19) All glass was custom tinted with ceramic tint for UV resistance to aid the new a/c system in keeping the cabin cool at all times even in extreme heat and sunlight.
20) Kenwood double-din touchscreen stereo added with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Under the passenger front seat are TWO 1000-watt JBL power amps. One of them powers the FOUR 6.5” JBL full range speakers and the other amp powers TWO JBL 10” subwoofers mounted in the walls of the truck bed area. Truck bed insulated with acoustic sound-dampening insulation behind the rear trim panels.
21) Center console from 1998 Toyota 4Runner. Shift bezel and shift bag are new Toyota OEM parts.
22) Switched the under-dash pull-lever style emergency brake to a center console hand brake.
23) Power windows, power locks, remote keyless entry added. Remote also will roll down the rear glass.
24) Custom GPS speedometer gauge added to dash since we could not find the correct size speedometer cable gear for the 33” tires on the truck. Speedometer works perfectly but reads about 10% slow so we added the GPS speedometer for driver assurance.
25) Added custom AutoMeter gauges to the dash for oil pressure and supercharger boost
I’m sure I forgot some stuff but this is a CLEAN build and restore. Nothing was untouched without being refurbished, replaced, or upgraded. Lots of blood sweat and tears in this one but it’s a beautiful and fun truck!
