Vehicle Description

1974 Dodge Dart Swinger 2 Door Hardtop

In the early 70's television commercial, the Swinger is promoted as "Dart Swinger, two door hardtop that appeals to youngsters 18 to 80" but we had to go back to 1970 to find a dedicated print ad which read, "If you're a swinger who thinks your budget can't swing a new car this year, take a look at the new Dart Swinger. If you won't take small for an answer, you could be Dodge Material." This last appeal is accompanied by a smiling model. Ah, the swinging 70's!

For consignment, a 1972 Dodge Dart Swinger 2 door hardtop with a title verified 53,323 actual miles. It has its numbers matching transmission, newer suspension and a Pypes exhaust system. This car was featured on a 21 second promotional video for Pypes which you can find on YouTube.

Exterior
Mannix the television private eye made a green Dart iconic with his '68 edition, and this '74 example wears two stage coverage of Deep Sherwood Green paint with a very nice vinyl top that is a close match in color. Sporty features are mainly found in the back where a wide tail stripe encircles the fenders and decklid in matte black and square chrome exhaust tips poke out from under the chrome bumper. Up front, its conservative design includes marker light embedded in the grille, bookended by round headlights, all framed in an impressive stainless trim piece. Fender mounted turn signals are here and represent one of the cool 70's trends while the groovy flower that dots the "I" in Swinger solidifies this car's era. 14-inch Mopar Rally wheels are wrapped in staggered size tires for a muscular stance. Imperfections include general inclusions in the paint, touched up scratches and chips throughout, a linear stain in the decklid fill panel and along the fender tops, chips around the trunk's keyhole, other various chips, a dent on the left rear fender along with some rust on both rears and the right front, and surface rust on the bumper.

Interior
It's a virtual forest on the inside with green vinyl door cards topped by handsome woodgrain inserts with both doors presenting nicely. The split bench in front is also dressed in dark green vinyl and other than a taped patch, both the front and rear seats show in good condition. It's back to the woods up front where the steering wheel takes on a cherrywood hue, fronting a dash completely faced by woodgrain and housing an arching needle in a square speedometer, round gauges, the vent panel, AM radio, and an added AM/FM/CD radio underneath. Clean green carpet is mirrored by a tight green headliner and the trunk is draped in a gray vinyl mat with some very light surface rust on the stamped steel floor.

Drivetrain
Clean and blue is the 318ci V8 under the hood, fed fuel through a 2-barrel carburetor and mated to the numbers matching A904 3-speed automatic transmission that sends power to the 8 inch rear. Power brakes and power steering are on board and the bay is super clean.

Undercarriage
The Pypes dual exhaust system includes their X-bomb union and a pair of mufflers, all leading to an exciting exit through chrome square tips out back. Brakes here are power disc and power drum, front and back respectively, while suspension consists of torsion bars up front and leaf springs in the back. Other than some patina, light oil film, and minimal surface rust, the underside is clean, dry and structurally sound.

Drive-Ability
And speaking of sound, the exhaust sounds way better than Mannix's and responds to throttle blips happily. On the test loop, the small car, (for the times), has plenty of get up and go, tracks straight, and brakes on demand. Not a lot of bells and whistles here but what does exist, operates exactly how it's intended. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.

This is a low mileage Swinger, clean topside and bottom, in a great color, and emitting a fantastic sound. "Swinger" had several meanings in the 70's and none of them were considered uncool. This one has all the right ingredients and presents as one groovy ride you'll want to share with your friends, just as any good swinger would.
