The El Camino has never fully fit any category, and that is exactly
why it keeps finding new fans decades after the last one rolled off
the line. It drove like a car, carried like a truck, and looked
like neither. The fifth-generation model rode on a 117-inch
wheelbase chassis unique to the El Camino, assembled from a
combination of Malibu, Monte Carlo, and Malibu wagon components
into something that was entirely its own. This one is finished in
Light Blue Metallic with a white bed cover and Corvette wheels, and
it has been gone through with a fresh set of tires, a new radiator,
new air conditioning, and a new dual exhaust system. It is a very
clean example that is sorted and ready to enjoy.
Under the hood is the 5.0 liter V8 backed by the three-speed
automatic. The 5.0 gives this generation El Camino the right amount
of power for how the car is built, pulling with enough authority to
make the drive enjoyable without the complexity of a bigger engine.
The new dual exhaust lets it breathe properly and gives it a
stronger note than the factory setup.
Inside, the blue cloth interior is clean and well matched to the
exterior. A wood-trimmed dash and crank windows keep the cabin
simple and correct for a car from this era, and the overall
presentation is exactly what a well-maintained fifth-generation El
Camino should look like.
The El Camino was discontinued after 1987 when the market had
shifted decisively toward compact trucks and SUVs. Chevrolet never
replaced it and has not revived the nameplate since, despite
occasional rumors to the contrary. A clean, mechanically refreshed
example in a classic color with Corvette wheels is the kind of find
that buyers looking for something usable, unusual, and genuinely
fun to own have a hard time walking away from.
