Few automobiles have achieved the legendary status of the
Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing. Introduced in 1954, its dramatic
upward-opening doors, advanced fuel-injected inline-six, and
competition-derived engineering established it as one of the
defining sports cars of the twentieth century. While original
Gullwings remain among the world's most coveted collector cars,
their rarity and value place them beyond the reach of many
enthusiasts.
Recognizing the enduring appeal of the iconic coupe, German
craftsman Tony Ostermeier founded Gullwing Cars, producing
meticulously engineered recreations that faithfully captured the
style and spirit of the original while utilizing the proven
mechanicals of contemporary Mercedes-Benz models. Rather than
simply replicating the appearance, Ostermeier's cars were designed
to be driven, combining classic Gullwing aesthetics with the
reliability, comfort, and ease of maintenance afforded by modern
engineering.
Offered here is chassis GW1036, completed in striking Fire Engine
Red over a beautifully trimmed beige leather interior. Built upon
the dependable Mercedes-Benz platform and powered by the
fuel-injected M103 inline-six, the car is paired with a five-speed
automatic transmission, and air conditioning making it
exceptionally well suited to modern road use.
This single owner example was retained by a noted Japanese
collector, who carefully preserved it since new in a
climate-controlled collection, until its subsequent importation in
2025. Having covered just 678 kilometers since completion, it
presents in outstanding condition throughout. Importantly, the car
has recently undergone a comprehensive mechanical service to return
it to roadworthy condition, allowing its next custodian to enjoy it
with confidence while preserving its remarkably original
character.
The cabin faithfully echoes the character of the original 300 SL
while incorporating the refinement expected of a contemporary
Mercedes-Benz. Beige leather upholstery complements the vivid
exterior, and two fitted luggage cases are secured on the rear
package shelf and adds an elegant finishing touch reminiscent of
the grand touring accessories offered during the period.
Combining unmistakable Gullwing styling with proven Mercedes-Benz
engineering, chassis GW1036 offers an ideal opportunity for the
enthusiast seeking the experience and presence of one of
Stuttgart's greatest icons without the compromises or expense
associated with an original. Beautifully presented and scarcely
used, it is equally at home on touring events, weekend drives, or
as a distinctive addition to any Mercedes-Benz collection.
Offers welcome and trades considered.
