This 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS is a highly desirable,
numbers-matching example powered by its original 396ci L78
big-block V8 rated at 375 horsepower. The engine is backed by the
original Muncie M21 heavy-duty close-ratio 4-speed manual
transmission and a CKK-coded 12-bolt Posi-Traction rear axle with a
4.10:1 gear ratio. The engine block is stamped with the matching
VIN (located by the oil filter), and the transmission is
VIN-stamped as well. In addition, all casting numbers and date
codes correspond correctly, confirming the car's authenticity. It
retains its original intake manifold, closed-chamber square-port
cylinder heads, and factory exhaust manifolds.
One of only 2,144 1970 Chevelle SS models equipped with the L78
396/375 horsepower engine, this example is documented with a
partial build sheet that helps verify its originality. The car
spent more than 17 years in storage before being rediscovered in
2001 and restored. It has accumulated just 47,000 original miles.
The original engine has been professionally rebuilt and balanced to
OEM specifications.
The body is all original, exceptionally straight, and rust-free,
retaining its original floor pans and trunk pan. It has been
refinished in its factory-correct Fathom Blue (Code 28) with white
SS stripes in a modern basecoat/clearcoat finish. Fathom Blue is
the car's original factory color. The undercarriage still wears its
original factory undercoating, and the car will be sold with its
original SS wheels.
Inside, the Chevelle features its original black vinyl bucket seat
interior (trim code 756), with the exception of the carpet, front
seat covers, and rear package tray. Additional factory equipment
includes the center console and gauge package.
