2003 marked the 50th year of Corvette production, and Chevrolet
made sure every car built that year carried the milestone. All 2003
Corvettes wore the 50th anniversary crossed flags badge on the hood
and rear fascia and carried the anniversary logo on the
speedometer, tachometer, and key fobs. This example is finished in
black with black leather, making it a 50th Anniversary Year model
rather than the special Anniversary Edition package, which was
reserved exclusively for the Anniversary Red Metallic cars. For
buyers who want the milestone year without the red and shale
combination, a clean black 2003 is the one to find, and this one is
exactly that.
Under the hood is the 5.7 liter LS1 V8 producing 350 horsepower and
360 pound-feet of torque. 2003 also brought several features that
had previously been optional as standard equipment across the
lineup, including fog lamps, sport seats, power passenger seat, and
dual-zone air conditioning. The LS1 pulls with the easy, linear
confidence that made the C5 generation one of the most respected
performance values in automotive history, hitting 60 miles per hour
in under five seconds and returning highway fuel economy that kept
it out of the gas guzzler category. The C5 was also chosen as the
festival and event car for the 2003 Indianapolis 500, the fifth
time Chevrolet had that honor.
Inside, the black leather interior is clean and well appointed with
a built-in garage door opener, an Alpine radio, and a digital
mirror with hands-free phone connectivity. An oil catch can system
has been added to protect the intake tract from blow-by
contamination, a smart preventive measure on a car kept in this
condition. LED taillights, side markers, and front grille lights
give the exterior a sharper, more modern presence than the factory
lighting while keeping the C5 silhouette clean.
The C5 was the last generation of Corvette to wear pop-up
headlights, a feature that had been part of the car's identity for
decades. When the C6 arrived in 2005 with fixed headlights, that
era ended quietly. A clean, well-maintained black C5 from the 50th
anniversary year with thoughtful modern updates in the right places
is exactly the kind of example the C5 collector market has been
paying attention to.
