1966 Ford Mustang Coupe – Arizona Car – 200ci Inline-Six – Automatic
If you’ve been looking for an honest first-generation Mustang that you can enjoy without spending fastback money, this 1966 Mustang Coupe deserves a serious look.
Originally restored in Arizona before spending time in Wisconsin, this Mustang is now located in Fortuna, California and offered on consignment through Platt Motors.
Power comes from what appears to be its original 200 cubic inch inline-six engine backed by an automatic transmission. The owner has kept the car exercised while in storage, and during my inspection it fired right up, ran smoothly, and drove well with no major concerns or red flags. These inline-six Mustangs have a well-earned reputation for reliability and are excellent cruising cars.
The body is straight with good panel alignment throughout. I did not observe any noticeable rust or obvious signs of previous rust repair. The paint appears to be a semi-recent repaint that would benefit from a professional detail, but it presents nicely overall. Chrome trim, moldings, hubcaps, and glass are all present and in good condition. The vinyl top is tight and shows well, and the Mustang rides on good 185/70R14 tires.
Inside, the upholstery appears to have been redone during the restoration. The front and rear seats, door panels, and headliner all present very well. The carpet shows only minor staining from storage and should clean up nicely. The car features an aftermarket steering wheel, an older dealer-installed style air conditioning system (not tested), and an aftermarket-style radio. The odometer reads 79,651 miles and should be considered True Mileage Unknown (TMU) due to the age of the vehicle.
The engine compartment is clean and orderly, and I did not observe any significant fluid leaks underneath during my inspection. The factory data plate is present, and the VIN stamping was located during the walkaround.
The current owner inherited the Mustang from her late stepfather and has decided it’s time for someone else to enjoy it. Rather than an over-restored show car, this is an honest, solid driver that would make an excellent weekend cruiser, local car show participant, or entry into the world of classic Mustangs.
