This late-production R107-generation Mercedes-Benz 560SL is a
phenomenal representation of ultimate 1980s grand touring luxury.
Showing 81,000 miles on the odometer, this car is a familiar friend
to us at Chicago Car Club; we actually sold this exact car back in
2016 when it had only 68,000 miles on it. Over the last decade, it
has been driven sparingly, adding just a few thousand careful miles
per year. Manufactured by Daimler-Benz AG in Stuttgart, West
Germany, in November 1987 (11/87), this vehicle carries the
official model designation code 107048, identifying it as a genuine
US-market 560SL powered by the legendary 5.6-liter V8 engine mated
to a smooth 4-speed automatic transmission.
Factory Data Plate Option Code Decoding Model Code (107048):
R107-generation 560SL Road Cruiser (Left-Hand Drive, Automatic
Transmission).
Paint Code (702 / 2 702): Finished from the factory in gorgeous
Smoke Silver Metallic (Rauchsilber) for both the primary body and
the matching auxiliary hardtop.
Interior Trim Code (273): Outfitted with premium Brazil Brown
Leather bucket seats and matching cabin accents.
Option 262: Elimination of Rear End Spoiler (Ensuring a perfectly
clean, sleek rear decklid line from the factory).
Option 442: Factory Airbag in Steering Wheel.
Option 491: U.S. Version Specification Package.
Option 519: Becker Radio Grand Prix Electronic Cassette System
(USA).
Option 581: Automatic Climate Control System with Air
Conditioning.
Option 808: Model Year Change (Official factory designation
confirming this as a coveted 1988 model year car).
Body, Paint & Structural Condition The body of this 560SL is super
straight, completely honest, and remarkably original. We ran a
digital paint gauge all over the vehicle, and the readings confirm
that it still wears its original factory finish with absolutely no
signs of past paint or body work. While there are a very few minor
stone chips from road use and some small, superficial rust spots
around the lower molding mount points, everything else is
incredibly clean and shows beautifully. The factory alloy wheels
are in great condition as well, and that includes the original
matching spare tire assembly tucked away in the trunk.
The underside of the car is bone dry, and the rocker panels are
fantastic, original, and solid-right down to the factory jacking
point locations. All of the glass is nice and clear. The car
includes its original matching Smoke Silver hardtop, and the canvas
soft top remains in super nice condition.
Mechanical Condition & Recent Maintenance This SL has been
meticulously and carefully maintained by the experts at Axels
Automotive in Lake Bluff, Illinois. The engine oil change is fully
up to date, and the car benefits from a comprehensive suite of
recent steering and suspension refresh work. Recent service
includes brand new Michelin Defender tires, new tie rods, steering
dampers, a new idler arm, new lower ball joints, and a fresh
four-wheel alignment. The car accelerates effortlessly, shifts
smoothly, and tracks laser-straight down the road with the tight,
confident ride these German cruisers are famous for. As she sits
right now, this car is turn-key and 100% ready to hit the road.
Interior & Functionality Inside, the Brazil Brown leather cabin is
completely smoke-free and presents in excellent, highly original
condition, showing only minor wear on the driver's outer bolster.
All of the factory gauges, switches, and luxury features work
exactly as intended. The original Becker radio has been upgraded to
a modern aftermarket radio unit that works great. We do note that
while the radio antenna functions and gets great reception, the
mast does not raise or lower automatically when instructed to.
Beyond that minor quirk, this highly optioned, structurally
pristine 560SL is completely dialed-in and ready for its next
caretaker.
