In 1966 Ford sold 607,568 Mustangs, capturing 7.1 percent of every
car sold in America that year. No other model in the country came
close, and the convertible was a significant part of that story
with over 72,000 open-top examples sold. The Mustang had become
more than a car at that point. It was a cultural phenomenon, and
the 1966 model brought refinements that made it even better. 1966
was the first year the free-floating Pony emblem appeared on the
grille, surrounded by horizontal bars instead of the original
honeycomb pattern, giving the front end a cleaner and more
distinctive look that became the defining image of the early
Mustang. This one is finished in Springtime Yellow and just
received a full paint job from Koenes Auto Body, and it wears that
work well from every angle.
Under the hood is the 289 cubic inch V8 backed by a 3-speed
automatic transmission with dual exhaust. The 289 was the sweet
spot of the early Mustang engine lineup, giving it genuine
performance without the complexity of the high-output options above
it. Power steering and power brakes make it effortless to drive,
BFG Radial T/A tires keep it planted, and it holds the road the way
a well-sorted first-generation Mustang should.
Inside, the black vinyl interior is clean and well matched to the
Springtime Yellow exterior. A black power convertible top opens and
closes as it should. An auxiliary cord has been neatly tucked away
out of sight for connectivity without cluttering the cabin.
The folder of receipts that comes with this car tells the real
story of how it has been maintained. A Mustang with documentation
is a Mustang with a history that can be trusted, and this one has
been given the care and attention that keeps a 60-year-old
convertible in the kind of shape where it fires up and drives the
way it should every time. These first-generation convertibles are
not getting any easier to find in this condition, and the
combination of fresh paint and a documented service history puts
this one in a short category.
