Classic Car Addict is proud to offer this exceptional 1966
Chevrolet Chevelle SS for sale in our Mesa, Arizona showroom. This
documented 138-code Super Sport underwent an extensive frame-off
restoration that began in the early 1990s and was meticulously
completed by a dedicated enthusiast over the course of more than a
decade. Built with attention to detail, performance, comfort, and
drivability, this Chevelle features lots high-quality upgrades.
Exterior:
The restoration began with the body being separated from the frame
and entrusted to a professional body shop for extensive metalwork
and panel replacement, all supported by detailed receipts.
Replacement components include both full quarter panels, a bare
driver-side door shell, radiator support, rear window and trunk
filler panel, right inner fender well, front dash assembly, and a
trunk floor section, sourced from Original Parts Group and other
reputable restoration suppliers.
Following the completion of the bodywork, the Chevelle was
refinished in its factory-correct Marina Blue using a modern base
coat/clear coat system, delivering exceptional depth and shine.
Exterior trim has been professionally polished, while new chrome
front and rear bumpers, headlights, taillights, and windshield
further enhance the car's fresh appearance.
Interior:
The interior has been completely refreshed with TMI Sport R bucket
seats front and rear, complemented by a new headliner, new carpet,
stock-style door panels, and new door and window hardware
throughout. An Ididit tilt steering column replaces the factory
unit, while a Dakota Digital VHX gauge cluster provides readouts
for fuel level, temperature, speed, tachometer, oil temperature,
and voltage. The cluster includes a 160-mph speedometer and an
8k-rpm tachometer.
Additional interior features include a RetroSound radio with
upgraded speakers and professionally installed Vintage Air
conditioning. DEI heat shielding was installed along the floor and
transmission tunnel, while Boom Mat insulation helps reduce both
heat transfer and road noise for a more refined driving
experience.
Engine:
Power comes from a 6.0-liter LS-based cast-iron V8 sourced with
approximately 40,000 miles. Before assembly, the engine was
completely disassembled and inspected, revealing factory crosshatch
marks still visible in the cylinder walls, a strong indication of
minimal wear. The engine was then rebuilt with brand-new GM LS3
aluminum cylinder heads featuring new valves and valve springs,
along with an LS3 intake manifold, factory fuel injectors, and
ignition coils.
Airflow is enhanced by a FAST 90mm Big Mouth cable-operated
throttle body fed by a K&N cold air intake, while MSD ignition
components provide reliable spark. Engine management is handled by
a FAST EFI system that currently operates on a base calibration.
The system starts and runs well but would benefit from a final
chassis dyno tune to optimize the fuel and ignition maps, as
evidenced by a slight idle surge.
Fuel delivery is managed by an Aeromotive Phantom in-tank fuel
system feeding the injectors through stainless steel fuel lines.
Engine temperatures are controlled by a Griffin heavy-duty aluminum
radiator paired with an electric cooling fan programmed to cycle
automatically at 170 degrees.
Transmission:
Backing the LS powerplant is a T56 six-speed manual transmission
equipped with a hydraulic throwout bearing. Power is sent through a
custom Dynotech DOM steel driveshaft measuring 3.5 inches in
diameter with a .083-inch wall thickness. The driveshaft has been
high-speed balanced specifically for the T56 output shaft.
Rear Axle:
Power is delivered to a Moser Ford 9-inch rear axle built with
Chevelle-specific brackets, a Posi differential, and aggressive
4.11:1 gears. This setup gives the car the strength, traction, and
gearing to match the LS powertrain and six-speed manual
transmission.
Chassis:
Prior to drivetrain installation, the frame was separated from the
body, media blasted to bare metal, and reinforced with full-length
1/8-inch steel boxing plates to increase chassis rigidity and
durability. The undercarriage reflects the quality of the build,
presenting with a clean black-coated floor pan, no visible rust, no
fluid leaks, and neatly routed fuel and brake lines throughout.
Suspension:
The chassis is equipped with a comprehensive suspension system from
Classic Performance Products, delivering modern handling without
sacrificing the Chevelle's classic character. Up front, CPP
round-tube control arms are paired with C6 Corvette spindles, a
1-inch lowered spring setup, and a CPP power steering gearbox for
improved steering response and road feel.
Out back, a CPP rear suspension system supports the Moser rear
axle, providing additional strength, stability, and control.
Brakes:
Braking performance has been significantly upgraded with 13-inch
four-wheel disc brakes, a CPP power brake booster and master
cylinder kit, and heavy-duty CPP sway bars at both the front and
rear to enhance cornering confidence. All factory rubber brake
lines have been replaced with precision-bent stainless steel hard
lines for long-term durability, reliability, and a clean
undercarriage appearance.
Exhaust:
Exhaust duties are handled by JEGS ceramic-coated LS swap headers
feeding a custom 2-inch dual exhaust system that exits through
polished side-exit tips, giving the Chevelle an unmistakable muscle
car sound to match its modern performance.
