*1962 Alfa Romeo Giulietta Spider*Built with prompting from
American Alfa Romeo importer Max Hoffman, the Alfa Romeo Giulietta
Spider is a stunning piece of 1950s Italian styling. Hoffman saw
the increasing interest in small sports cars in the United States,
and convinced Alfa Romeo to have Pinin Farina to design a beautiful
roadster body to put on the Giulietta platform. Built between 1956
and 1962, the Giulietta Spider is a car known to be a joy to drive,
and potentially even more exciting to look at. This 1962 Giulietta
Spider is a final-year example that benefits from a number of
upgrades to make it even more fun to drive, without changing the
character of the original car.Finished in striking dark red over
red, this Giulietta was purchased 36 years ago by the previous
owner as a project, which was restored over a span of roughly 10
years. This work included repairing damaged or rusted metalwork,
installing new trunk and floor pans and completely repainting the
car which was completed 26 years ago. The car still presents in
excellent condition with very good quality chrome work, and an
original set of alloy wheels with chrome center caps completing the
look. The interior is equally as nicely finished with dark red
upholstery on the seats with black piping, and matching red on the
door cards. Dynamat was put down under the carpets to improve both
noise and heat insulation in the cabin. A 3-spoke wood rimmed
steering wheel is the only item that doesn't look stock, but its
slightly smaller diameter makes ingress and egress far easier, and
it looks great. The body-matched dashboard houses a trio of
beautiful Veglia gauges with inset needles and a floating outer
disc for the readouts. All Giuliettas were fitted with 1290cc
variants of Alfa's famed twin-cam inline 4, but this car has been
upgraded. In 2009, the original engine was swapped out by Silicon
Valley Performance in Mountain View, CA for a 1,750cc unit from a
1969 Alfa Romeo GTV. Along with the additional displacement, the
single side-draft Weber carburetor has been swapped out for a pair
of carbs with open trumpets, with power estimated to be around 120
hp and 130 lb-ft of torque. Under the hood, only a true Alfa
enthusiast can spot the difference, but from behind the wheel it's
huge. Power is then sent through a 5-speed manual gearbox to the
rear wheels for maximum driver enjoyment. It will be hard to not
enjoy the drive in this car, as the sounds it makes are outstanding
- with the induction noise from the carburetors in front, paired to
a custom exhaust with Magnaflow muffler, you'll be enjoying every
rev from the engine. The experience of driving a vintage Alfa Romeo
is sure to put a smile on the face of any driving enthusiast, and
the ability to put the top down only improves the drive. This 1962
Giulietta Spider with its increased power and considerable
refurbishment over the years is a perfect way to enjoy classic
Italian car ownership and have a car that gets looks from everyone,
but is also plenty quick to cruise with modern traffic.*Key
