more model year left after this one before Chevrolet quietly
retired the nameplate for good. That makes any 1986 example a
near-end-of-production piece of American automotive history, and
the Conquista trim is the one worth having. The Conquista name
comes from the Spanish word for conquest, and the package brought
special paint treatment and extra bright-metal trim that set it
apart from the base model in a way that has aged very well. This
one is finished in gold, which suits the Conquista's upscale
intentions perfectly, and it presents as a solid, honest example
with dual exhaust and the 5.0 liter V8. There is some paint
chipping in a couple of areas that is noted here for transparency,
but the car is structurally sound and a good candidate for someone
who wants to enjoy it as-is or invest in a paint correction down
the road.
Under the hood is the 5.0 liter V8 backed by a three speed
automatic, sending power to the rear wheels the way an El Camino
should. Dual exhaust gives it a stronger exhaust note than the
stock setup and suits the personality of the car. The El Camino's
G-body platform gave it its own dedicated chassis for the fifth
generation, the first time in the model's history it did not share
a platform with another Chevrolet, and the combination of car-based
handling and open bed utility is exactly what made these trucks so
appealing for so long.
Inside, the tan cloth interior is clean and well kept with power
windows that were a notable option on a car at this price point in
1986. The cabin is simple, comfortable, and honest, the way a
working-class American personal vehicle from this era should
be.
Nobody has ever fully agreed on whether the El Camino is a car or a
truck, and that is precisely why it has always had such a loyal
following. It does not fit a category, it does not try to, and it
does not need to. The El Camino was discontinued after 1987 when
the Chevrolet S-10 was outselling it too heavily to justify
continuing production, and every example that survived is now a
piece of a closed chapter. A gold Conquista with the V8 in honest,
driveable condition is exactly what the El Camino market
appreciates.
