2008 was the 40th anniversary of the film Bullitt, the movie that
cemented the Mustang's reputation as the definitive American
performance car and made Steve McQueen the king of cool in the
process. Ford marked the occasion by bringing the Bullitt name back
to a production Mustang for the second time, and journalists who
drove both editions agreed that the 2008 was considerably closer in
spirit to the original than the 2001 had been, with the retro lines
of the S197 platform bringing it as close to the 1968 movie car as
any factory-built Mustang had ever come. Only 5,772 were built for
the 2008 model year. This one is finished in black, the rarer of
the two colors available, completely original with no
modifications, and as clean an example as you will find.
Under the hood is the 4.6 liter V8 producing 315 horsepower, backed
by the Tremec TR-3650 five speed manual with a 3.73 rear gear ratio
that Ford specified to improve acceleration and give the car a more
aggressive, connected feel than the standard GT. Ford also fitted
the Bullitt with its first-ever open-element cold air intake in a
factory fuel-injected Mustang, along with a specific exhaust tuned
to replicate the sound of the 1968 movie car. The result is a car
that sounds and feels like more than the numbers suggest, which is
exactly what every journalist who drove it said at the time.
Inside, the black leather interior is clean and correct. Each 2008
Bullitt came with a unique dash applique, a polished aluminum shift
knob designed specifically for this car, and its own individual
VIN-specific serialized plaque on the strut tower brace. The
Euroflange Bullitt wheels are the factory-style Torq Thrust
inspired design that defines the look of this generation, and the
spoiler-delete and badge-free exterior keep the car as clean and
understated as the original was.
The Bullitt name has now appeared on three separate production
Mustangs, and each one has held its value better than the standard
GT it was based on. A black 2008 in original, unmodified condition
is exactly the specification that collectors are looking for as
these cars settle into their place in Mustang history.
