The C. Cretors & Company popcorn machine empire traces its roots to
a small bakery and confection shop opened by Charles Cretors in
1880. The Decatur, Illinois-based storefront was anything but
modest however, reflecting Cretors' instinctive flair for spectacle
and promotion; enticing passersby with vivid, colorful displays and
candy-making equipment strategically positioned in view of the
street. Equally gifted as an inventor, Cretors soon began
engineering his own confectionary machinery which began with his
steam-powered automatic peanut roaster in 1885. His ambitions
evolved further with the creation of elaborate mobile concession
wagons that could roast peanuts, brew coffee, and pop corn
simultaneously. Introduced in 1900, Cretors' so-called Special
wagons were hand-built to order and tailored to each individual
client, making each wagon unique.
The vibrant popcorn wagon offered here is a 1909 Improved Special
Model "C," positioned in the Special model range as an affordable
enclosed wagon designed to be used in all seasons. These
steam-powered units prominently featured a rear-entry door and a
large bay window that provided great views of the engine with ample
display space around its 360-degree serving area. The
confection-creation process was amply provided for, with two corn
poppers, a roasting cylinder, peanut pan, a large capacity drawer
for stocking raw items, and plenty of shelves for extra storage
space.
Like many surviving early 20th century steam-powered concession
machines, this example has been thoughtfully converted for modern
electric operation. Its lights remain fully functional, and, most
importantly, the wagon continues to produce popcorn more than 100
years after its creation. Further enhancing its presentation and
charm, it is accompanied by its liquid butter dispenser,
period-style popper hats, and hundreds of vintage popcorn bags.
Optimized for museum display yet remaining a perfectly functional
concession wagon, this flamboyant 1909 Cretors Improved Special
Model "C" Popcorn Wagon is equally capable of captivating crowds at
distinguished collections, family gatherings, or
turn-of-the-century-themed events with the same irresistible
spectacle and savory aromas that first made it an attraction more
than a century ago.
