1968 Pontiac Firebird Convertible For SaleThe 1968 Pontiac Firebird
convertible is a first-generation F-body from the middle year of
that short three-year run, and this example has been set up as a
driver-focused build with a freshly rebuilt Pontiac V8 underhood.
Finished in red over a black soft top with a white vinyl
bucket-seat interior, it carries a classic period look while
running a more modern combination of bolt-ons.Power comes from a
rebuilt Pontiac 400 V8 - not the original engine, but the right
family of motor for the platform, given that the 400 was the top
engine option in the '68 Firebird lineup. The top end has been
built with an Edelbrock intake manifold and Edelbrock carburetor,
and exhaust is routed through long-tube headers into a true-dual
system with straight-through performance mufflers, giving the car a
free-breathing setup with the tone these Pontiac V8s are known for.
The engine is presently on break-in oil and will want another 200
miles or so before its first change to 30W. Behind the engine is a
TH350 automatic, with a 3.08 ratio in the rear - geared more for
relaxed highway cruising than quarter-mile work.Stopping is handled
by front discs with rear drums, a meaningful upgrade over the
all-drum setup these cars left the factory with. The car rolls on
Cragar SS wheels, a period-appropriate choice that suits the
Firebird's lines well. Inside, the white vinyl buckets play cleanly
against the red bodywork and black top, and the dash has been
supplemented with aftermarket gauges for water temperature, oil
pressure, and a tachometer to keep an eye on the freshly rebuilt
engine. Audio comes from a Sony Bluetooth and satellite-capable
head unit, a discreet modern addition that doesn't disrupt the
interior's character.The first-generation Firebird ran only from
1967 through 1969 before the redesigned second-generation car
arrived, and convertibles from that three-year window have always
been the more collectible body style. This one isn't presented as a
numbers-matching survivor - it's a freshly rebuilt, hot-rodded
driver, ready for someone who wants to actually use the car rather
than trailer it.NFI Empire specializes in classic, exotic,
