For auction, a 2003 Ford Explorer XLT with a title verified 147,133
actual miles. The XLT was the midline trim package on a vehicle
that helped popularize the SUV movement in America.
Exterior
An overall attractive vehicle, the 2003 featured more rounded edges
than previous generations and this one features two stage Redfire
Metallic paint with charcoal body cladding that encircles the
Explorer and connects at the rear bumper and front apron. Robust
black door handles, running boards, tinted windows, a roof rack,
and a front bug guard add to the handsome design here while 16-inch
wheels carry tires with a late 2021 date code. There is a tow
receiver in the back flanked by corner tail lights that are flush
with the body. Overall, the body is in fair condition with
imperfections that include multiple areas of clear coat peeling,
scratches, chips, a trim panel on the tailgate that is cracked,
blistering, some clear coat runs and invasive rust in both rear
rockers.
Interior
Dark Graphite and other shades of gray adorn the door panels with
plastic construction and cloth inserts and while there's some
exposure wear on horizontal surfaces, the door presents in mostly
good condition. Cloth seats that include buckets up front and a
third row in back are also in decent condition and fully intact. A
four spoke steering wheel fronts your standard instrument cluster
with basic gauges and a column shifter and the center stack retains
its factory profile with an AM/FM/CD player, vents, and A/C dials.
Ample storage is provided by the center console which could use a
detail and the gray carpet below could use a cleaning, but it is in
nice shape in other parts of the SUV. The headliner and overhead
console show some light use but are fully intact.
Drivetrain
Driver quality conditions are found under the hood on the fuel
injected 4.0 liter SOHC V6 with 210 horsepower. It's mated to a
5R55S 5-speed automatic transmission with power routed to the
limited slip rear 8.8" and front axle, both with 3.73 gears.
Undercarriage
Consistent with the mileage, we find plenty of surface rust on the
underside and some oil at the pinion seal. A single exhaust flows
through original equipment and power disc brakes are at all four
wheels. Both front and rear suspension are independent with
Macpherson struts up front and coil springs in back.
Drive-Ability
The SUV starts, runs, and drives well. We note the ABS light is on,
the A/C works but blows cool, not cold air, and the power mirror up
and down operation is not working. Outside of that, all functions
work as intended. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these
functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot
guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your
purchase.
Considering age and mileage, this Explorer has held up very well
and likely has many more family adventures in its future. Remove
the rear rows of seats and you'd have one heck of a delivery or
work vehicle!
