Up for auction is a 1960 Ford Sunliner convertible showing 937
miles, but the true miles are unknown. The soft top version of
Ford's Starliner was big news in 1960 as it came equipped with a
352ci V8, the Thunderbird engine that the sales brochure was
compelled to write, "the hills surrender on sight!"
Exterior
The sleek body of the Fairlane line is a far cry from the tall,
bulbous cars of the 40's and 50's. Now showing some age and patina,
it's not hard to imagine the former, (and future?), glory of the
Raven Black paint and white canvas top. The front is accented with
crosshair-like hood ornaments and a central lion hood ornament
which was an option in 1960. A side spear that starts on the door,
ends at the rear bumper and joins an aluminum panel accent
reminiscent of the '57 Chevrolet wedge, on this one is at the base
of the overhang. Meanwhile, a robust polished trim piece rides the
waistline and lines the horizontal fins out back that are like
eyebrows over the fantastic tail lights that are split by the
chrome bumper. Imperfections include paint chips, bubbles in the
paint, delamination of the glass on the vent windows, stains and
inclusions on the horizontal surfaces, deplating of chrome with
surface rust in place, bubbling on the edge of the decklid and
hood, cracking paint, general dulling.
Interior
Black and white vinyl is the interior palette as well with door
panels that are complete but have seen better days. The split bench
throws a band of white through black tuck and roll padding and both
front and back are mostly intact and in need of a deep clean. A
horn ring fronts the black steering wheel while the dash splits
aluminum faceplates in a style that mirrors the tail lights, here
with a row of black knobs intersecting rounded panels. An AM radio
in the center and a Sunliner call out is on the glove box under an
intact dash pad. It all shows a bit of patina but shows no broken
components. Black carpet is on the floor and the underside of the
canvas roof is in good condition although the plastic window does
have haze. We note a very musty smell on the inside.
Drivetrain
In the dusty bay you'll find a 352ci V8 with a 2-barrel carburetor
and a horsepower rating of 235. It's backed by a Cruise-O-Matic
3-speed automatic transmission that sends power to the Ford 9" rear
with 2.91 gears. Power steering is on board.
Undercarriage
Significant invasive rust is present in the frame rails and under
the doors. Dual exhaust runs through a pair of stock style mufflers
and suspension consists of coil springs up front and leaf spring in
back. Drum brakes are supplied to all four wheels.
Drive-Ability
The starter clicks but the engine does not turn over, indications
that it might be seized. Of note also is that there is no key for
the trunk.
More than 44,000 Sunliners were built in 1960 but are considered
uncommon in today's collector world. At the very least, this is a
decent parts car with some OEM components that are not recreated in
the aftermarket world.
