The FJ40 is one of the most respected off-road vehicles ever built,
and the early 1970s examples are the ones serious collectors go
looking for. In 1971 a Land Cruiser was driven the full width of
the United States while surveying an off-road route, and just three
years later a nearly stock FJ40 won the Baja 1000 outright. These
trucks were not built to impress anyone at a car show. They were
built to go anywhere, and they did. This one was delivered new on
March 27th, 1971 by Desert Motor Company in Las Cruces, New
Mexico.
The truck is finished in Capri Blue with a white two-tone and
received a full repaint in 2006. Over the years since, it has
developed some rust on the body and floor pan. The truck is overall
in good condition and has had significant mechanical work done in
recent years, including new Rancho front and rear shocks, brakes
serviced, a new fuel pump, reconditioned fuel tank, and new battery
and negative cable. Driver and passenger door seals have been
replaced as well.
Inside, the cabin is honest and original in character, wearing its
50-plus years of life without apology, which tells you about the
kind of ownership this vehicle has had over its life.
The options on this truck are exactly what you would want on a
working FJ40. A PTO winch, chrome front bumper, dual rear gas tank
holders, tow package, roll bar with factory gun rack, and rear dual
jump seats give it a level of utility and presence that the base
truck never had. The original service log, factory documentation,
and known ownership history from new are what separate a truck with
a story from one that just looks old.
Rust-free, unaltered FJ40s are either major projects or priced out
of reach for most buyers. This one sits in an honest middle ground,
a truck with real history, real documentation, and real character,
priced accordingly.
