Chevrolet launched the Advance Design series in 1947 as its first
all-new post-war truck, and the design was a meaningful step
forward in every way. The cabs were roomier, the visibility was
better, and the styling was cleaner and more integrated than
anything that had come before it. Chevrolet ranked number one in
truck sales every single year the Advance Design was in production,
which tells you everything about how well the buying public
received it. The 1951 model brought its own refinements to the
formula, and this example wears them well. Finished in Forester
Green with a chrome grille, chrome bumper, chrome hubcaps,
whitewall tires, a wood bed, and black side steps, it is as
handsome a presentation as the 3100 body is capable of.
Under the hood is the Thriftmaster inline six, Chevrolet's name for
the 3.5 liter engine that powered the 3100 through the Advance
Design years. The name was not marketing fluff. The engine earned
its reputation for reliability through decades of daily use on
farms, job sites, and rural roads across the country, and the
simplicity of its design is exactly why so many of these trucks are
still running today. The three speed manual keeps the driver
connected to everything the truck is doing, the way a truck from
this era was always meant to be driven.
Inside, the brown leather bench seat is comfortable and well suited
to the cabin. The 1951 model received new Ventipane door vent
windows, replacing the old side cowl vents of earlier examples, a
small detail that made the cab noticeably more pleasant to spend
time in. The interior is honest and straightforward, exactly what a
truck of this era and this character should be.
The Advance Design trucks have become one of the most sought-after
platforms in the classic truck world. Their proportions are
considered by many to be the most balanced and handsome of any
American pickup before or since, and clean examples in classic
colors with the right chrome details have been climbing steadily in
value for years. A Forester Green 3100 with whitewalls and a wood
bed does not need much explaining to anyone who has been paying
attention to the market.
