For auction, a 2001 Ford Explorer Sport with a title verified
40,379 actual miles. In the early days of the SUV rise to
prominence, three door sold in small numbers but Ford's Explorer
Sport was the most "common of the uncommon" owning 75% of the
market in 2000.
Exterior
We'll call this period correct color and configuration as Dark Teal
Metallic is contrasted by a gray base, bumpers, and running boards.
The model got a facelift in 2001 and presents a more modern fascia
with more integrated headlights, a unique grille design, and
foglights embedded in the bumper. Roof rails, tinted windows, and
sunroof add to the practicality and family enjoyment of the rig
while 16-inch factory wheels carry 255/70R16 tires with an early
2025 date code. Overall, the Ford's body and paint are in great
shape. Imperfections include some scratches and chips and a slight
dent in the tailgate.
Interior
Gray plastic lines the doors and cargo area walls and remain in
very nice condition. Up front, Dark Titanium leather bucket seats
also affirm the truck's low mileage with only some slight creasing
on the driver's seats. The two seats in back and the shotgun seat
are all in great shape. Up front, a four spoke steering wheel leads
to an attractive instrument cluster with white faced gauges while
the center stack is replete with an array of buttons, knobs and
switches to control everything from the range selector and wipers,
to the AM/FM/CD radio and air conditioning. The center console
shows some use and contains a storage bin and two cup holders over
gray carpet. Gray is also up above where a clean headliner
surrounds an overhead console and sunroof.
Drivetrain
Under the hood you'll find the 4.0 liter SOHC V6 with fuel
injection and 205 horsepower. It's backed by a 5-speed automatic
transmission routing power through both axles and 3.73 gears. The
bay presents as original.
Undercarriage
Some typical surface rust and road soot are found underneath where
things look solid and complete. Power disc brakes are on all four
wheels and a single exhaust still runs through original equipment.
Suspension consists of torsion bars up front and leaf springs in
back.
Drive-Ability
This low mileage Explorer starts, runs, and drives well.
Believe or not, first gen Explorers are considered classics in some
circles and this second gen is still a rare sighting. This is a low
mileage example that's in really nice shape.
