For auction is this 1972 Citroen SM Hatchback with a title verified
58,393 actual miles. Over its five years of production, only 2,400
SM's were originally exported to the United States. This example
does not run,and the starter only clicks with the jump pack
connected to the battery.
Exterior
Our consignor indicates this car was resprayed in Porsche Guards
Red, but it's the unique and wild shape of the car that stands
apart from all others. A long nose, sloping roofline, curved rear
window and rear fenders that skirt over the rear wheels. This shape
was good for the claimed .026 drag coefficient by Citroen. For
comparison, today's Porsche Taycan has a coefficient of .022 and an
Aston Martin DB11 is .030. Meanwhile, the front fascia puts round
headlights in their own individual cove, flanking fog lights behind
plexiglass in the center. Out back, the tail lights are framed in
chrome structure followed by exhaust tips pointed towards the
corners, while the edge of the hatch contours over the license
plate. The hood is not shaped to accommodate the wipers, but
contains an offset vent topped by Citroen's double chevron.
Imperfections include a few chips and some light pitting on the
door handles and SM C-pillar emblems.
Interior
The unique interior begins with leather clad door panels with
ergonomic armrests and robust hardware, showing a bit of patina but
fully intact. The sport bucket seats are split by a center console,
and some wear is seen on the driver's chair while the passenger's
seat and rear 2+2 are in better shape with deep tuck and roll
inserts. Citroens always have interesting steering wheels, and this
one does not disappoint as it connects to an oblong column fronting
a simple dash with three main gauges and the wild inclusion of
stopping distance imprinted around the speedometer. A circular
indicator light panel rings around a red stop light while other
barrel type gauges join switchgear over vents and an A/C panel. The
center console holds the chrome shifter which is gated horizontally
and a vertical AM/FM radio. It all shows a bit of patina and could
use a deep detailing.
Drivetrain
Green features abound on the Maserati-derived 2.7 liter V6, fuel
injected through a Bosch D-Jetronic system and rated at 170
horsepower. It is backed by a fully synchronized 5-speed manual
transmission and unlike most American cars at the time, keeps power
to the front wheels with 4.375 gears. These cars were known for
their hydropneumatic suspension, four wheel disc brakes, and dual
exhaust.
This is a rare and unique car in need of some obvious TLC and it
does not start.
