1928 Stutz BB Black Hawk Speedster The Legendary Ruger-Callaway
DV32 TurboFew automobiles in existence represent the intersection
of engineering, performance, and passion quite like this
extraordinary 1928 Stutz BB Black Hawk Speedster. Known as the
Ruger-Callaway DV32 Turbo, this one-of-one creation was
commissioned by firearms industry icon William B. Ruger and
engineered by the renowned team at Callaway Advanced
Technology.Bill Ruger's fascination with Stutz automobiles began as
a teenager when he first encountered a Black Hawk Speedster at the
New York Auto Show. Captivated by its long hood, sleek proportions,
and advanced engineering, Ruger never forgot the impact the car had
on him. Decades later, he set out to explore the ultimate potential
of the legendary Stutz DV32 engine, one of the most sophisticated
powerplants of the prewar era.The original DV32, designed under the
leadership of Stutz engineering genius Fred Moskovics, featured
dual overhead camshafts and four valves per cylindertechnology
decades ahead of its time. Ruger believed that, with modern
engineering and materials, the DV32's potential had never truly
been realized. In 1993, Ruger enlisted renowned engineer Reeves
Callaway to develop the ultimate version of the Stutz powerplant.
After nearly three years of development, testing, and refinement,
the result was nothing short of remarkable. The original 332
cubic-inch inline-eight was transformed with modern fuel injection,
electronic engine management, forged internals, titanium connecting
rods cast at Ruger's own foundry, and a Garrett turbocharger. The
finished engine produced an astonishing 360 horsepower and 430
lb-ft of torque at 17 psi of boost, with early testing exceeding
440 horsepower before boost levels were reduced. The engineering
details are extraordinary. The original block and cylinder head
were retained and enhanced with modern components including forged
aluminum pistons, stainless valves, Motec engine management,
sequential fuel injection, Accel ignition, custom-fabricated
stainless exhaust and intake systems, and extensive cooling
upgrades. Power is delivered through a GM 4L80E four-speed
automatic transmission, while upgraded brakes, power assist, and
dual master cylinders ensure modern drivability.Finished in elegant
two-tone gray over a striking red Connolly leather interior, the
Black Hawk Speedster retains its original 1928 four-passenger body
style that first inspired Ruger as a young man. The cabin features
custom upholstery by master craftsman Johan Merkhofer, Recaro front
seats, polished aluminum instrumentation, and a comprehensive suite
of VDO gauges.Over $300,000 was invested in the development of this
singular automobile, not including the value of the custom titanium
components. The result is a prewar masterpiece capable of
effortless highway speeds, modern reliability, and performance that
rivals sports cars from generations later. It successfully
completed the 1996 Copperstate 1000 and remains fully documented
with engineering records, tuning specifications, and build history
from Callaway.More than a collector car, the Ruger-Callaway Stutz
DV32 is a rolling testament to innovation, vision, and
uncompromising engineering. It stands as one of the most
extensively developed and thoroughly engineered historic
automobiles ever createda one-of-one machine that embodies the
passion of Harry Stutz, Fred Moskovics, Bill Ruger, and Reeves
Callaway. Drive The Coast is a licensed insured and bonded Florida
